This arrangement for brass quintet employs contemporary harmonies with the traditional melodies to provide a sound that is pleasing to the ear while making the pieces sound fresh. The top four voices take turns with the melody while the tuba sets a foundation with chromatic passing tones that should be given a little emphasis as they occur. Away in a Manger The first two verses are sometimes attributed to Martin Luther as “Cradle Hymn�, but definitive proof of Luther's authorship is missing. The most common version is based on words found in a Philadelphia Sunday School book by James Murray in 1885 titled “Luther's Cradle Song�. Silent Night Franz Gruber was an Austrian church organist at St Nicholas parish in Obernhof, a small town north of Salzburg. The priest at the church, Joseph Mohr wrote the poem Stille Nacht in 1816 and Gruber composed the music for guitar accompaniment for a Christmas eve service in 1818 because something, possibly a flood, had damaged the organ. So, rather than a keyboard composition, this was originally composed for guitar and voice. The composition was preserved by the man who fixed the organ and shared it with other churches as he traveled. Luckily a copy survived so that Mohr and Gruber could both be acknowledged for their creation.

It's simple, unadorned melody offers solace to a modern, hectic world. The lullaby-like quality of the meter brings to mind images of the babe being rocked gently in his mother's arms. I knew that I would write an arrangement of this carol, and it seemed to flow from my thoughts almost complete with only a few small tweaks. It is inspired by memories of holding a glowing candle in the church as the congregation sings, lit only by the warmth of candlelight. There is also a somewhat haunting quality reminding me of Christmases past and those loved ones who are no longer with us.

It is a quiet arrangement of themes often associated with the stillness of night. It begins with a simplified arrangement of Chopin's Berceuse and evolves to Hush Little Baby, Rock-a-bye-Baby and the Brahms's 'Lullaby. I arranged it to keep the themes intact but updated some harmonies.

His full name was Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Suppè. He is regarded as father of the Viennese operetta. As he very often composed on bad quality librettos, most of his operettas nowadays are no more performed on stage. But many of his overtures and melodies are still popular, like this overture to the operetta Ein Morgen, ein Mittag, ein Abend in Wien (Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna), which was first performed in Vienna in February 1844. The original cello solo starting at bar 14was transcribed in this arrangement to the bass clarinet, as it is the only wind instrument in this score covering the range of the cello's solo part. There are also alternatives for clarinet (as in the orchestral score) or flugelhorn combined with euphonium. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg and first performed conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their 2014 New Year's Concert on January 6th in Salzburg, Austria.
