This beloved English folk song has been known in many versions since the 17th century. It gained even more popularity upon being featured in Walt Disney films “So Dear to My Heart†in 1948 and “Cinderella†in 2015. All parts may be played on Lever (Celtic) harp or Pedal harp. This arrangement may be played as an easy solo by only harp 1 (omit the measures of rest at the beginning and end), but is especially charming with the addition of the intermediate harp 2 part. For example, a teacher may play the harp 2 part to accompany harp 1, making a lovely recital piece for a beginning student. The harp 1 part includes lyrics so that it may (optionally) be sung by the harp 1 player. The optional harp 3 part is even easier than harp 1, and may be played by another beginning student. Cello or bassoon may be substituted for harp 3.

This is a relatively easy to play solo piano jazz arrangement of THE BAR NECESSITIES. The song is a traditional jazz tune made famous in the Walt Disney movie THE JUNGLE BOOK. 
The video and audio recording I posted here features me playing the short version of my arrangement. When played as written (with all the repeats) it is almost 4 minutes long.

What's cool about this arrangement is that you can easily add a bass player and even an entire rhythm section while playing it the same way as you would in a solo performance!

Who this arrangement is best suited for

I think everyone who likes the song except perhaps advanced jazz pianists will have fun learning and playing this arrangement. 
I arranged this piece originally with my younger piano students in mind, who have smaller hands than most adults. That’s why there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand. Something generally found in ragtime and early jazz piano styles. This means that my arrangement is perfectly suited for pianists with smaller hands. Of course pianists with large hands (like myself) can play it too (ha-ha!).
I think it is also a great piece for pianists who want to familiarize themselves with playing jazz piano. And since I wrote out every note and articulation, they can play along with the recording and hopefully pick up the traditional jazz feel along the way.
Although the arrangement is not very difficult, it poses several challenges for the inexperienced pianist, as explained later.

How I arranged it

As I already explained above, there are no large intervals or big jumps in the left hand to be found. Instead, I focused more on polyphonic arranging techniques, in both hands. I also used guide tones and inversions.
The left hand imitates the accompaniment style of a traditional jazz guitar or banjo player with added half time bass figures that are typically played by a tuba or upright bass an octave lower.
 
Tips for how to learn this arrangement

When I teach this song to my students I strongly recommend to them to listen to the original version and my recording a lot, rather than explaining to them how swinging eighth notes and jazz articulation work. By the way, there are a few bars where you hear me playing straight eighths on the recording (as indicated in the sheet music). 
I decided to add articulations so that pianists who have not a lot of experience with playing jazz will find it easier to play it with the appropriate “touchâ€. It's a good idea to check those out.
Should you not be familiar with playing polyphonic passages with one hand, you might want to practice very slowly at first and attempt to balance the different voices appropriately. 
Listening to the recording will also help with discovering dynamic possibilities. I didn’t want to clutter up the sheet music with dynamic markings, so listening to the recording is really the only way to figure out what dynamics I had in mind.

A beautiful, relaxing trio for alto flute, bass flute, and classical guitar (optionally with added keyboard-synthesizer), in the romantic impressionistic style (Debussy, Ravel, Delibes, Satie, etc.), by Bradley Powell, who has recorded many albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. A moderately easy piece for the flutes, and an intermediate level classical guitar part. Here it perfomed by Bradley Powell featuring GIlberto Hildavio performing the alto and bass flute parts.  The Alto flute part, Bass flute part, and guitar part are all included here (the optional keyboard plays chords off the guitar part).

Gilberto Hildavio was a flute student Luella Howard, principal flutist of the 20th Century Fox Studio orchestra in Los Angeles. Hildavio has played woodwinds for many leading shows in Los Angeles (including Sunset Blvd, Fiddler on the Roof.), and performed with many musical stars, including the Percy Faith orchestra.

ABOUT the composer: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. Brad also played as the solo guitarist for Disney's Princess Breakfast Adventure at Disney's Grand Californian Resort by Disneyland (March 2019-January 2024), providing music for the Disney Princesses (Belle, Tiana, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Mulan, Aurora, Ariel, Pocahontas, Cinderella, and their friends and guests).
