A friend of mine, Chad Walker, came to me with the standard sheet music to this piece and asked me to make it harder, fit the hands better, and fill it out.  Much to his delight and chagrin, this is the final result.This piece would be perfect for playing in church, especially during Easter or Pentecost.  It would also be nice for the last Sunday in Epiphany when many liturgical churches say, Goodbye to the word, Hallelujah.The first verse is relatively simple, with a bassline arpeggio that fits the hand nicely.  The chord inversions in the interludes are supposed to represent the angels on Jacob's Ladder.  The second verse is a little more full with some ornamentation.  The third verse culminates in block chords in the right hand with a bassline that alternates between a heartbeat and running feet.www.thequarternotes.com

Published by Erik Cole (A0.996124). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. This movement is the only one with enough low notes to really need two contrabassoons. Many groups won’t have that, and the harmonies actually work better leaving out the lowest note in those spots. The prominent contra parts in this movement make it pretty obvious that the MP3’s were made without access to one at all.

However, the 'easy piano' music that is available to them is, in fact, usually beyond their capabilities - particularly in the first year or two of lessons. These arrangements are my attempt to remedy that. I will continue to add more titles soon! If you have a suggestion of a title, please let me know!This piece can be played as a solo or with the optional accompaniment part. The piece uses only quarter, half, dotted half and whole notes. The student also keeps their hands in 'Middle C' position (RH/LH first fingers share Middle C). With two exceptions where the RH fifth finger reaches to the A above Middle C, the fingers remain in position.The arrangement is written in 4/4 so that it's easy for the student to count while learning it. However, once they have mastered it, counting in a slower 2/2 may be helpful - it's up to you.

Hopefully you'll discover that it feels completely natural to sing and play those notes together. I was chatting to my mom in South Africa yesterday, and she requested some new music for her upcoming birthday(preferably me singing another aria), but I woke up with this in my head early this morning and so I got to work. It reminded me a little of all the Chopin waltzes I played many moons ago, and it made me sad that he died at the young age of 39, so I decided to call it The Birthday Waltz. Chopin's music really shaped the way I hear melody, and I love his body of work. And my mom has always been my biggest fan, coach and champion, so I hope she likes this piece, and I guess Ill go and record an aria for her now!!! ps I think this piece will be a great preparation for students who are eager to learn some Chopin Waltzes. It sounds harder than it is and I think it's fun to play (and even my husband loved hearing it all day). I hope you enjoy it too.

Programme Notes: This composition was written to be considered for pairing alongside Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony #3, the Eroica, but can stand on its own virtues as an intense and slow meditation on heroism. The music is like a boiling pot on the stove that’s just began to overflow its bubbles. The first part of the title, kommos, is a Classical Greek term from Attic dramaturgy, literally meaning striking but specifically referring to beating oneself up during lamentation--ripping at the hair, gouging out the eyes--like Oedipus--slapping the forehead, and other acts amid moments of extreme emotional turmoil. For example, from Aeschylus's play Agamemnon, a character bewails: Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! For you have destroyed me-and utterly [...]What is this fresh woe [...]what monstrous, monstrous horror, beyond love's enduring, beyond all remedy? And help stands far away! We can easily imagine physical accompaniment to the script; rather than bottling up the pain, the hero lets it all explosively come out.  â€ƒThe second part of the title, When the world moved on, is an epigraph taken from American author Stephen King’s The Dark Tower epic. The primary setting of the novel, a world similar in many ways to our own, is experiencing a dark age where the glorious past is all but a distant memory and all good things are referred to wistfully as occurring, When the world moved on. Yet, the main protagonist, Roland, the last gunslinger, emphasizes that it is not just a figure of speech, but the literal distances between destinations have increased, the positions of the stars have changed, as well as the occurrence of other unnatural phenomena. The world has become a gulf of isolation from all corners. Taken together, this piece is a lamentation for when the world moved on. Truly completed on Yom Kippur during the Covid-19 Pandemic, being unable to fast or go to synagogue, this is my atonement.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.
