Withers was inspired to write the song after watching the 1962 movie Days of Wine and Roses. He explained, in reference to the characters played by Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon, They were both alcoholics who were alternately weak and strong. It's like going back for seconds on rat poison. Sometimes you miss things that weren't particularly good for you. It's just something that crossed my mind from watching that movie, and probably something else that happened in my life that I'm not aware of. It's arranged for an Alto trio or group, but would work with a soprano voice on the top line too. It's great for an English speaking choir wanting to challenge themselves with a different language. Scenes of Singapore is a collection of 89 short piano pieces highlighting scenes of life in Singapore. The intent of this is similar to Edvard Grieg's Lyric Pieces, where he composed 66 short pieces with nationalistic sentiments. The difficulty of the pieces ranges from Intermediate to Advanced Intermediate.Each piece in the suite is fashioned after one of Singapore's constituencies from the 2015 General Election. From each constituency, I have taken the first letter from its name and given the piece a title to reflect the identity of the area there. The music was then composed around that particular identity. The entire suite was composed in 2019 over a period of about 4 months and because it was not on time for National Day, I only officially released the suite in early August 2020 instead. This elegiac piece was composed by me in the wake of the awful massacre on Friday, November the 13th of Parisian citizens by murderers of French and Belgian background belonging to the self-named terrorist Islamic State. As a college student in London in the 1950's I invariably took in the City of Light during my many summer holidays spent in Europe, usually accompanied by my best friend, Gerard, of Lyons. He taught me how to savor the best that a French restaurant had to offer, as his mother was a Cordon Bleu when it came to the cuisine of that fair land. We also visited Brussels in Belgium and the French Riviera and parts in between to partake of the various excellent wines that the region had to offer. En route to settling in the USA two decades later my family and I spent a few days in Paris, so that I could convey to my wife and three girls what France had done in contributing its language and culture to so many parts of the world, including out native India. In some small way, I offer this effusion of grief in a positive, if not joyous vein, because that's how the melancholic chords end - in a tierce de picardie from A minor to A major.

The range of notes is very compact with the difficulty steming from the often complicated rhythms and also the opening statement of the main theme is unaccompanied requiring the soloist to play with confidence and accuracy. The use of syncopated rhythms makes this an excellent repertoire piece.Heaven Is a Place on Earth is a single by American singer Belinda Carlisle from her second studio album, Heaven on Earth (1987).
