The first several bars came to me in a 2011 vivid dream in which Paul McCandless was playing soaring soprano sax melodies and Jaye Alison Moscariello was singing lyrics I did not remember from the dream.  It was originally in D with some Dad-related chord progressions.  This version is in A to better fit the alto voice.  After writing 3 verses of rather convoluted lyrics about healing the planet, Jaye helped pare it down to one powerful verse that could be a world anthem.  George and Paul play solos during the instrumental break. We think this would make a great national, or international, anthem. My friends joked about it being the opening theme for Wednesday Season 2 which gave me a chuckle, the mix is a little hot in the MP3 and the dynamics might need some work in general. But hey, not bad for one days work if you ask me.  The Crystal Synth is just a nifty little sound in Musescore 4, I wrote a Glock 1 and 2 part that mimic the synth as it has intervals baked into the sound.

It wasn't until 2003 that up-and-coming singing sensation Josh Groban recorded the song and made it a huge hit. Josh even sang it at Super Bowl XXXVIII and in a special NASA commemoration for the crew of the Space Shuttle 'Columbia' disaster. The meloody for You Raise Me Up is Celtic inspired. It is melancholy, yet inspirational. This song is very emotional, and this arrangement appropriately gives the opening to the cello; then unassumingly to the 2nd Violin. When the 1st Violin finally gets to voice the thought-provoking melody, the supporting instruments pull at your heartstrings with their harmonies. This song is a real tear-jerker. It's a jewel.

Written as part of the Family Suite, this piece is dedicated to my daughter Mason. I think a good word to describe Mason is tenacious. When she gets focused on something, such as a school project, planning the details of a party, or finding a lost book, she sticks to it with intensity until the project is completed or the problem is solved. Like a boomerang, she'll keep coming back to the issue at hand. The repetitive phrases in the first section of this piece remind me of Mason persistently coming to me as a child with a request, not willing to give up until every possibility was exhausted. She was also the child most likely to physically and verbally express affection – when she came home after having been away for a while, she usually greeted me with a hug and told me how much she missed me.
