It employs two quintet groupings to create straight-ahead, ensemble energy. The two quintets trade off melodic and rhythmic figures throughout the opening. In the mid-section, the two Altos trade solo lines, then combine in a riveting climax. The two quintets then trade tight, challenging tutti phrases as the piece rockets to a big-band-like ending.
