Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,English Horn,Flute - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1453968 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Daniel Kaplan. Baroque,Chamber. 55 pages. Daniel Kaplan #1033157. Published by Daniel Kaplan (A0.1453968). Bach's Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, is a monumental work for organ, first performed by Bach (according to some scholars, possibly improvised on the spot!) in Hamburg in 1720. Over the years it has been arranged for various ensembles, including full orchestra, but this is the first arrangement I'm aware of for woodwind quintet. The character of the piece is somewhat changed, becoming livelier and more dance-like, but it remains a wonderful flight of fancy (arguably the original meaning of fugue), and by the end the attentive listener may be quite carried away. This is part of Kaplan's project to enhance and broaden the woodwind-quintet repertoire with both great classics and beautiful lesser-known works. The varied timbres of the woodwind instruments add clarity to contrapuntal writing, allowing the individual parts to be more clearly perceived and followed by the listener. (Kaplan has made many other woodwind-quintet arrangements, for most of which the sheet music is available on this website.).

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,English Horn,Flute - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1419166 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Daniel Kaplan. Baroque,Chamber,Classical. 33 pages. Daniel Kaplan #1000598. Published by Daniel Kaplan (A0.1419166). Arrangement by Daniel Kaplan for woodwind quintet of Bach's Prelude and Fugue No. 24 in B minor from Book 1 of The Well Tempered Clavier. The prelude is in an unusual (for a Bach prelude) binary form. The fugue is remarkably chromatic and complex, based on a subject employing all 12 notes of the chromatic scale (prefiguring Schoenberg's 12-tone system, to come two centuries later!). Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has arranged several other great works for this ensemble, including many of his favorites from The Well Tempered Clavier (also available on this website). The woodwind quintet is especially well suited for contrapuntal music since the distinctive tone colors of the wind instruments bring out the contrapuntal lines and make them clearer to the listener.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,English Horn,Flute,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1410742 Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Daniel Kaplan. 19th Century,Chamber,Classical. 112 pages. Daniel Kaplan #993135. Published by Daniel Kaplan (A0.1410742). Dvorak's charming and wonderful Bagatelles are rarely performed, because he wrote them for two violins, cello, and harmonium, and who has a harmonium anymore? (They are sometimes performed with substitution of a piano for the harmonium, but the harmonium version is far superior, as the piano lacks the sustaining quality of the harmonium.) But they are a natural for woodwinds! Kaplan is engaged in a project to make classics from other genres available to woodwind players and has also arranged several other great works for this ensemble. Many of them are now for sale on this webste, and more will be uploaded soon.Note that due to Dvorak's key signatures and the varying tessituras of the parts, the movements sometimes call for oboe and sometimes for English horn, and the clarinet parts alternate between clarinet in B-flat and in A.

Small Ensemble Bass Clarinet - Level 3 - Interactive Download SKU: A0.1081182 Composed by Horace Silver. Arranged by George Kaplan. This edition: Interactive Download. Jazz. Score and parts. 9 pages. Duration 134. George Kaplan #3twZIB0zYvsynuaepMfK1d. Published by George Kaplan (A0.1081182). Key: F# major.Horace Silver had not seen the insides of a recording studio for 750 days before laying down Silver 'n Brass. His previous record, In Pursuit of the 27th Man, was unusual in its instrumentation (vibes) and for including a number of non-Silver tunes. (But the cover of Liberated Brother, from that record, did go on to become the backbone of his late 70s live shows.) So, as a prolific composer, Horace had a large backlog of tunes at his disposal as he entered the studio in January, 1975 and the 6 cuts on Silver 'n Brass are among his best. Horace broke the sessions into two: a straight-ahead post-bop session with Ron Carter (whose chubby bass spews artifacts all over the place, in his best late-70s style) and Al Foster on drums and another, more commercial session featuring Bob Cranshaw and Bernard Purdie. Wade Marcus later added horn overdubs employing an absolute who's-who of LA session players. (Word quickly got out among the cognoscenti, and Silver 'n Brass became hugely popular among fellow musicians, much to Horace's delight.) Highlights of the disc include: the composer's propulsive piano solo on Dameron's Dance, young Bob Berg's paint-peeling tenor solos (especially riveting on Kissin' Cousins) and the driving flat 9th chords of Adjustment. The tune Barbara, a gorgeous waltz dedicated to Horace's then-wife, has become a latter-day standard of sorts (Amazon's MP3 store lists a whole bunch of covers). Sophisticated Hippie, a tribute to Duke Ellington, features quite a rhythm-section workout in its closing vamp: this session would be the only time that Horace and Bernard's paths would intersect. There are no vocals this time out, just fully arresting post-bop of a high order.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,English Horn,Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1413688 Composed by John Davison. Arranged by Daniel Kaplan. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical. 21 pages. Daniel Kaplan #995473. Published by Daniel Kaplan (A0.1413688). Kaplan has fond memories of studying composition with John Davison at Haverford College, where music majors received a copy of his book, Piano Music I. This has been a beloved companion through the years, always in a prominent place on the piano. The first Prelude and Fugue is by turns introspective and knotty, and works well in a woodwind-quintet arrangement (even though here and there some notes are omitted—after all, a pianist has more than five fingers!—or raised or lowered by an octave). The woodwind quintet is ideal for contrapuntal music, since the distinctive color of each instrument helps to bring out the contrapuntal lines. This is part of Kaplan's project to broaden the repertoire of music available to woodwind-quintet players by arranging both great classics and little-known gems. Several more of these arrangements have been (or will soon be) posted to YouTube and are available for purchase.

Instrumental Duet,Piano Electric Guitar,Instrumental Duet,Keyboard,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1385825 By Stephen Sullivan. By Stephen Sullivan- arranged for SATB and Rock Band. Arranged by Original Score. 21st Century,Patriotic,Rock,Singer/Songwriter. 16 pages. Stephen Sullivan Arts #969765. Published by Stephen Sullivan Arts (A0.1385825). Based on the events of 9/11 and including audio clips from where the airport officials indicated the carnage on board one of the planes that struck the former World Trade Centers 1 and 2 on Tuesday, September 11th, 2001.  I was 12 and a half years old at the time, and my brother was 10 and a half.  Before he woke up, he had nightmares about flames.  That was really creepy.  The song centers on the trauma that the elementary school students across the street from the destruction in Manhattan faced as they witnessed the planes strike the towers, and everything that ensued.  It uses the opening melody of Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto, repeated and with the addition of drums, a wild bass solo, and some electric guitar riffs.  It's a little painful even for me to listen to.  I listened to it a lot this evening before posting it for sale.Stephen Sullivan- 02/20/2024Southeast Indiana *.
