The Sony Classical release was voted by People Magazine as one of the top ten albums in all musical categories in 1996. O’Connor scored the original recording of Old Country Fairy Tale to include doublebass. Here, he has adapted the instrumentation to call for violin, viola and cello for improved playability. The composition features O’Connor’s beautiful melodic phrases dynamically ushered into the classic setting. His theme for Old Country Fairy Tale undergoes a development of three different dance traditions found in fiddle music– the Hornpipe, Waltz and Jig,– which in broad terms, presents a unique version of a fiddle contest round. Fêtes galantes was actually planned as a hybrid opera-ballet to a libretto by Debussy’s friend Louis Laloy in November, 1913. For this, Laloy arranged selected poetry by Paul Verlaine into three tableaux, replacing an earlier (unstarted) Debussyan project with Charles Morice of 1912 entitled Crimen amoris. During his last productive summer of 1915, Debussy set a sequence from the start of the first tableau, ‘Les Masques’, involving stanzas 1 and 3 of the opening song for Mezzetin in Verlaine’s comedy Les Uns et les autres (1884). The action is set in a park à la Watteau late one summer afternoon as Mezzetin attempts to entertain a group of nonchalant masqueraders with only the aid of his voice and a mandolin.. This appears to have been prefaced by a slower, elegiac introduction reminiscent of the opening of the comtemporary Cello Sonata and it leads to a danced minuet by the masqued dancers which has clear echoes of the piano piece L’Isle joyeuse (1904). Following Laloy’s scenario, the masqueraders then sing extracts from Verlaine’s ‘A la promenade’ (from Fêtes galantes itself). The minuet returns at greater length before being cut short by a chilly gust of wind, after which the park returns to its orginal state (and music) as though nothing had really happened.

The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow.  I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois. The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul. I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise.The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter. The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories. The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future. The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed. The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.

This is the second movement from Suite Grandkids which contains six pieces originally scored for classical guitar trio, one for each of the grandkids that I had at that time (2005). I decided to write lyrics for each movement, creating this version for voice (male and/or female) and classical guitar. This download contains score and all parts. The picture of my grandkids looks like a poster for cultural diversity. Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. For Analysia's Margarita I used a street merchant's chan that I heard in the Andes to give it a Peruvean flavor. Performance time is 2 minutes and 43 seconds. Demand level is mostly intermediate with a few advanced sections.
