Most of her poems are full with detailed descriptions, transferring the poems to a medium of picture, carefully painted and calculated. Yet, it is quiet amazing that these poems came from the hand of a woman who lived secluded life, in her hometown Amherst, Massachusetts. A clue may be finds in one of Dickinson's saying: To shut our eyes is to travel. As I approached Dickinson's poems (which are close to 2000), I found that most of them, even the short ones, are built into a large space. Each poem needs its development time and cannot be rushed or squeezed to a regular song form. In The Sea of Sunset, I have let the words, the nature description, and the lazy mood of the poem take me to the picture medium. Adding the murmur of the sea, and the whisper of the wind, I tried to get as close as possible to the picture I saw through the poem. It is a setting of three poems (in English translation of the original Hebrew) of Judah Halevi, who was a Jewish scholar and poet who lived in Spain in the Middle Ages. The three movements are I. The Mirror, II. Do the Tears Know?, and III. Calm After the Storm. Each is just under three minutes. The total duration of the piece is between 8.5 and 9 minutes. The audio clip is from the third movement, in a performance of the sextet version of this piece. A complete recording is available upon request from the composer at ebrill@hcc.edu. The performers are Dianne Smith (soprano), Janet Polvino (flute), Isabelle Boggs (clarinet), Bob Ferrier (guitar), Craig Bitterman (percussion), and Joyce Crouch (piano). It may be performed with just piano accompaniment as well. Composer's Notes: The translation of the first poem, The Mirror, is by the 19th century American poet Emma Lazarus, most famous for her familiar words engraved on the Statue of Liberty: Give me your tired, your poorâ?¦ There has been some interesting academic discussion concerning this poem. It is generally attributed to Halevi, but some scholars now believe it may have been written by someone else. (I have also seen the translation attributed to someone else.) The second poem, Do the Tears Know? was originally a tombstone inscription for one of Haleviâ??s friends. This setting was written to honor my father, Harold Allan Brill, who passed away in January, 2000. The third poem, Calm After the Storm, is actually the second half of a longer poem about a sea voyage. The three songs are meant to be performed continuously, without a break in between. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs. Metamorphosis is a finalist in the 2017 Christopher Bill Composition Competition.Metamorphosis, for trombone octet, is a piece where the themes constantly change and transform into something new. In its slow beginning, a lyrical melody is played against a drone until it’s joined by more trombones. This happens three times. Then, the entire choir is joined together to form the climax to the slow section before the transition to the faster section. Almost instantly, the mood changes into a more playful sounding section. A new bouncier theme is introduced against muted eighth note chords in the background. In its second big statement, the presentation of the theme is broken up with different motives from both the beginning slow section and the fast playful theme. In its third statement, only the smaller motivic ideas are left as the volume and intensity grow. Finally, both melodies get squished together. The initial lyrical melody is once again stated, but this time it’s over the background of the second playful melody. This newly edited version of Elgar's 'Sea Pictures' matches up this piano vocal score with a new set of orchestra parts (available separately). Previous versions of this work by other publishers are traditionally littered with mistakes and wrong notes / instructions, which have been fixed in this edition, including the addition of rehearsal marks which correspond with the conductor score and orchestra parts. Elgar's 1899 work is a song cycle consisting of five songs: Sea Slumber Song, In Haven (Capri), Sabbath Morning at Sea, Where Corals Lie and The Swimmer. It has become one of the most popular works for contraltos and mezzo-sopranos and is frequently a major study work at conservatoires and universities. This new version is for voice and piano, with the piano part adjusted to more closely resemble the orchestral parts. Whilst Elgar originally wrote Sea Pictures for a soprano soloist, he lowered the key to suit contralto Dame Clara Butt, who gave the premiere. This edition is in the traditionally performed lower keys, suitable for mezzo-soprano or contralto (we also publish this in the original higher keys for soprano on SheetMusicPlus).
