One year later, the poem was discovered and set to music by the English organist Henry Gauntlett. He wrote more than a thousand hymn tunes, but this one remains his most famous, adapted to a 3/4 time signature for this arrangement to give it a gentle, swaying feel. Idelssohn's research into the music cultures of the different Jewish communities of Jerusalem laid the foundation for the growth of a unique melding of east and west that is the Israeli musical style. ·        Hevenu Shalom Aleichem (We brought you peace) was first published in 1910 by the musicologist Franz Haverel, as a Turkish folk melody Sala'am Aleikum. It came to Palestine in the same year, as an advertisement for Turkish cigarettes; the tune was printed on the package. ·        Hayu Leilot (There were nights) was written by Mordecai Zeira in 1938 to a poem by Yaakov Orland. Though this song is little known outside of Israel today, it is one of my favorites, and I hope will become one of yours as well. You are also welcome to try some of my other arrangements.
