This arrangement maintains that mood with only a few vigorous accents. It is playful and witty and somewhat mischievous. It makes for a good study piece for more advanced intermediate students because of the staccatos all over the keyboard with only isolated pairs of notes played legato for accentuated phrasing. The middle section will help to develop dexterity in rapid finger work. And it's just plain fun to do.

James MacPherson was an outlaw in the North East of Scotland, one of the travelling people and the leader of a band of robbers. MacPherson was caught in Keith and hanged at the Cross of Banff on 16 November 1700. MacPherson was a fine fiddler, and he composed this tune the night before he was hanged and played it on the scaffold. Then he offered to give his fiddle to anyone who would play the tune at his wake. No-one would, so he smashed the fiddle. Anyone who had accepted it would have shown themselves to be a relative or friend of his and so liable to arrest themselves.The song is also known as 'MacPherson's Farewell'. Robert Burns rewrote the song, but these are the traditional lyrics. The tune is very popular amongst Scottish fiddlers.The pieces of MacPherson’s fiddle are displayed in the MacPherson Clan House Museum in Newtonmore.

This transcription is based on the album version and arranged to be played on a 4-string bass with standard tuning.This song is in the key of F major and is about 3’19 long. The tempo is at 102 bpm and suitable for an early-intermediate player. Do take note, at bar 16, 20, 32, 36, 54 and 58, you are required to let the F# note to ring (sustain) while playing the D note, resulting in an interval of major thirds apart, but an octave higher, which is a voicing in major tenth to be more precise. The song ends in a fade-out manner, so, I have transcribed similarly to let you to play along with the album version. If you are playing with a band, do listen to the live version for some idea on the ending.
