Fairly unusually, all of the current windows were designed by a single person, the great Russian twentieth-century artist Marc Chagall. They make for a dazzling spectacle in that small church, as they are characterised by strong, bold colours. However, behind their commissioning lies a heart-wrenching true story as they commemorate the tragic death of a young local girl in a boating accident. This piano piece aims to reflect some of the poignancy of these images. The work is characterised by a constant ostinato pedal (a repeated pattern on a single note). Around this, various triadic harmonies are juxtaposed, as the piece gradually makes what may be interpreted as a 'heavenly' ascent in pitch to the piano's highest register. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and advanced players.
