Han River Fantasy Suite is based on and inspired by Nash’s first trip to Vietnam in 2007.   Commissioned by a percussion and horn duo, it is a five movement chamber concerto with mvts 1 and 2 performed continuously, as are mvts 4 and 5, giving the aural perception of 3 movements.  Mvt. 1, Dawning and mvt. 2, Morning Power Walks stem from Nash’s morning routine during that particular journey as he walked along the Han River in Danang, Vietnam every morning.  Mvt 1 is a slow and lyrical prelude, with vibraphone and chimes serving as melodic and colorful supporting lines for the horn solo and that immediately proceeds to Mvt. 2, a fast and somewhat fiery movement, alluding to a fast power walk. Mvt. 3. Moonlight Stroll is slow and lyrical, highlighted by bowed vibes and triangle being struck while placed on a timpani during a glissando in the middle section.  Mvt. 4, Boat Ride is a fast and dance-like, composed in compound duple meter and transitions to mvt. 5, Going Home, in a slightly faster simple quadruple meter.

The first of them, Danza (Dance), is inspired by a genre typical of Venezuela’s Western part, known as the zuliana dance. The second movement, Galope (Gallop), in the genre of pasaje, a waltz of a moderate tempo, typical of the Venezuelan plains. The third one, Frailejón, is a slow waltz where the stillness of the Venezuelan Andes is reflected. The fourth movement, 5/8, is in the merengue rhythm, a genre typical of Venezuela’s  central part. And the last one, Joropo porfiao, is in the joropo rhythm, a name designating different musical expressions of a quick ternary tempo, from different parts of our country. The name porfiao (stubborn) derives from the constant repetition of an alike melodic cell in the form of an obstinato.

After much debate, I decided changing the key to E flat would be most appropriate for either small group of players ( minimum 7) or larger groups . In the piece there is even additional divisions to help create more texture and colors in parts 3 & 4, yet remaining simple and true but sounding beautiful , what flutes should sound like.Great for studying flutist, to high school and college students. Flute choir groups, etcwould be a great addition for your ensemble, whether playing at a recital, concert, church and other spiritual events, graduation, weddings, etc. This would also be a great tool or warm up for balance and shaping sound, volume, color, blending, phrasing and other important technique builders for your group.You'll love this arrangement   ,and so will the flutists and your audience!

Though the harmonies are generally pleasant, seeming to have popular or jazz origins, there are various musical spices adding more body to that sweetness. The first movement, Improvisation, captures the mood of a free-form prelude, as if the players were improvising on a set of chords, some of which seem to be influenced by jazz or other non-classical idioms. Dialogue, the second movement, is a conversation between the violin and guitar. There are times when one instrument accompanies the other, but generally both players add important thoughts to the rhythmically diverse conversation. The third movement begins with a guitar accompaniment supporting the violin’s Song. Later, these two roles are reversed. Dance is essentially a disagreement. The violin plays a quasi-aristocratic eighteenth-century gavotte while the guitar prefers a sombre chromatic waltz. There is emphatic disagreement over which dance the players should perform, but in the end a solution seems to be found. The last movement, Pursuit, is a playful chase that is interrupted by a dreamy pause to catch one’s breath. Complete performance duration is ca. 15 minutes.
