Because they were written for a stringed instrument, the technique is challenging, but the genius of Bach's music more than makes up for this challenge.  All four suites are in bass clef and they are of moderate difficulty and higher.

It is part of the Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis catalogue (BWV catalogue) of the works of J. S. Bach, and sometimes called the Orchestral Suite No. 5, but was almost certainly not composed by him. It is more likely that the composer was W. F. Bach. It is a French suite with an overture and several dances, which has a similar structure with the 4 orchestral suites by J. S. Bach. But one point making it different from the 4 orchestral suites by J. S. Bach is that it has one movement not in the home key (which is the Aria in E-flat major). Themes for Part 1 are taken from the opening scene of Act Two, in which Haldin’s mother, in exile in Geneva and worried by the lack of news from her son, learns that Victor was the assassin and has now been caught and executed. Part 2 is an instrumental interlude. Part 3 is based on the scene in which Razumov is urged to visit Mrs. Haldin, an encounter Razumov dreads because it was he who informed on Haldin to the government. The final Part corresponds to the scene in which Razumov learns that news received from Russia has released him from suspicion for Haldin’s death by placing responsibility on an innocent man. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.0788-E). This 1931 suite was first performed by a principal player of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Ferdinand Gillet, with Jesus Sanromá as pianist. It is dedicated to Dr. Augusts Thorndike, an amateur oboist who was the father of one of Piston's friends. Commentators on the music suspect that Piston might have been writing it to suite Thorndike's tastes and skills, for it is unusually brilliantly written for the instrument, but is uncommonly Debussian and Ravelian in its style, which abounds in use of the whole-tone scale and chords of the ninth. It even quotes Debussy's Clair de lune and Roussel's Suite in F. The movements of the suite have titles that would not be out of place in the music of any of these composers, such as Nocturne, Sarabande, Prelude, and Minuetto.
