The Moon Song has also worked very well as accompaniment for one or more contemporary dancers.The piece is written in a flamenco rhythm called siguiriyas. It may look complicated on the page, but is counted more simply in 5 beats, with three short and two long beats: [1] and [2] and [3] and uh [4] and uh [5] and In this case, the 1, 2, and 5 are the short beats and the 3 and 4 are long beats. This pattern repeats regularly throughout the piece, though there are a couple of extra bars interspersed to allow for breathing space at the end of certain phrases.The piece was inspired by the early 20th century Spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca's poem of the same name, hence the use of the flamenco rhythm. The poem's dark, moody nature fits the cello's character very well.

Based on the tune HERZLICH TUT MICH VERLANGEN by Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612), this partita consists of six movements. Chorale settings frame inner movements that employ doleful ostinatos, a quasi-canon, and a bicinium that turns into a trio at the cadences. With anguished and unconventional harmonies, the work begins fortissimo on a second inversion of an F major seventh chord and ends pianissimo eight minutes later on an A major chord. Originally composed for organ, this partita works well for strings and is particularly suited for Lent, Holy Week, or communion services. A compatible edition is available for Woodwind Quintet.
