As a young traveling musician I recall playing this tune and being surprised that people would actually get to their feet and start dancing whether at a reception, bar, or picnic. I've tried to convey this excitement in this piano arrangement of this piping tune.

On his sister Fanny's birthday on 14 November 1828 Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy surprised her with a piano piece in E flat major entitled 'Lied'. This is the first time this term was mentioned, under which ca. 50 lyrical piano pieces by Mendelssohn became popular later. In his lifetime the composer had six volumes printed, and another two collections were compiled and published posthumously. As performed by Eva Eugenio.  This arrangement of Katakataka grew out of a desire to introduce our classes to the culture and music of the Philippines. While we have several Filipino students in our choirs, we were surprised at how little the non-Filipino students knew of this wonderful and diverse group of islands. In the process of learning this piece, in addition to getting a small sample of the Tagalog language spoken in many parts of the Philippines, we took time to study its history and geography as well as the history and evolution of it’s music - from native instruments, to the Spanish influence and beyond. Additionally we spent time learning a fun Filipino dance called Tinikling and included that dance as part of our performance. Any combination of C instruments would work including violins, flutes, and Orff percussion just to name a few. A good guitar player could replace the piano part to make it more authentically Filipino. My Filipino students were a great help in learning the language and there are several resources available on YouTube and beyond that will aid in better understanding and performing this work.

As it is such a popular hit I was surprised to find that the original was by Bob Dylan, from the album ‘Time out of Mind’ from 1997, and also that it has been covered many times by different artists.In writing this for string quartet, I have given the melody to viola and cello as well as first violin, and mostly made use of the harmony in Adele’s version of the song, adding a few dissonances to spice it up a bit. I also include an expansive string interlude section with some double stopping for the viola.The performance is by Capriccio Quartet, who play for weddings, seasonal events and parties in England.Although this quartet is suitable for professional musicians, young players will also be able to manage it with a few adaptations. Firstly, the key of G is a an easy one for strings.The cellist will need to be able to play in fourth position, but only on the A string, and the tempo is slow. There is some double stopping for the viola in the string interlude, but it includes an open G, which can also be left out altogether without losing much harmonic tension. The bowing is a guide only, so take as many bows as make you feel comfortable and use the open strings wherever you need.Let me know if you perform it, and send me any recordings as I love to hear them, especially those from young players. He was a Spanish clown, mime, acrobat, comic actor and circus artist, with American nationality since 1922, who is considered the best clown in the world of his time.Marceline was Spanish artist born in 1873 who performed in several European countries. Around 1895 he had success at the London Hippodrome and then enticed by producers Thompson and Dundy to come to the New York Hippodrome, where he arrived with great fanfare in 1905. He was a part of shows at the Hippodrome through 1915, by which time his pantomime routine and falling gags were falling out of favor with the public. He did reappear at the Hippodrome for some later shows in 1920-21 and 1922-23.Attempts to succeed in the restaurant business in New York and Connecticut both failed, and he lost money in real estate ventures. Out of work and out of savings, Marceline was found dead by suicide in his hotel room on November 5, 1927, with photographs of his glory days on the bed.Marceline was long admired by Charlie Chaplin, who worked with Marceline at the London Hippodrome from December 1900 to April 1901, and is one of just a few performers from this period of his life that Chaplin discusses in his autobiography. Many listeners will be unfamiliar with the almost recitative-style opening that follows the four-measure intro. So when the well-known tune is finally heard at measure 23, some at least will be pleasantly surprised. But don’t decorate the melody too much here; just enjoy it as it is, let that warm trombone sound shine through! The 2nd trombone can decorate the melody a little more from measure 31 onward, but don’t let any swing feeling creep in before measure 38. You may wish to speed up a bit more than I have indicated at measures 47 and 62, but don’t play the swing sections too fast – this is not an up-tempo version. Just strengthen the swing feeling a little each time. This piece will test your quartet’s ability to play an easy swing really tight – especially when the melody is being pulled around, the lead player is playing a little behind the beat. As is usual with my arrangements, every player has the lead at some point, and maybe the chance to introduce a few of their own ideas.
