Solo contrabassoon, piano, and orchestral winds - Digital Download

SKU: IZ.CBW208-S

Composed by Daniel Baldwin. Score. 45 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #CBW208-S. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBW208-S).

9 x 12 in inches.

Many years ago I was on a flight to another premiere and had the pleasure of sitting next to a sonic engineer. It was a fascinating conversation talking about the different aspects of his career and hearing him expound on the similarities between our chosen professions.

Ever since that flight, I wanted to write a Sonic Rhapsody. I had originally thought of having it be a more esoteric piece, exploring different sonic colors and effects. Instead, for this Sonic Rhapsody, I decided to fill a hole in the contrabassoon repertoire. This wonderful and deserving instrument has so little concerto repertoire and most of the pieces that do exist are quite difficult (and none for orchestral winds accompaniment). This Sonic Rhapsody features a lyrical and approachable contrabassoon duo feature (with piano) to include a brief cadenza for each soloist.

Sonic Rhapsody for Contrabassoon, Piano, and Orchestral Winds is dedicated to the wonderful artists who commissioned, recorded, and made this piece possible.

Composed by Ben Clapton. Classical,Contemporary. Score and parts. 103 pages. Ben Clapton #803587. Published by Ben Clapton (A0.1205401).

An Orchestral Fanfare, written for the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Perth.

2 Flutes (2nd doubling Piccolo), 2 Oboes, 2 Bb Clarinet, 2 Bassoon, 4 French Horns, 2 Trumpets in Bb, 2 Trombones, 1 Tuba, 4 Percussion (Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbals), Harp, Strings

Composer's notes:
2022 was a year that sparked inspiration for me. I am not talking about just one spark either, but a series that beautifully led me to the creation of my piece. After seeing the 2022 MetSO program it was evident that it lightly using the Brass players, and I knew they were feeling a bit underutilised. Which sparked the first idea in my mind to write a piece that would take full advantage of their skills, and heavily use brass instruments. The program coincided with the 45th Anniversay of the Orchestra which started it life as the Karrinyup Symphony Orchestra. Rekindling the orchestra’s relationship with the City of Stirling and returning to the City of Stirling as a rehearsal venue in 2023, was another spark of inspiration which led me towards the piece’s naming… the ‘Karrinyup Fanfare’. The last spark of inspiration was a query inside my mind. The opening of the piece contrasts two somewhat conflicting meanings of the word Karrinyup. During an Aboriginal Studies unit, I discovered that Karrinyup is a Noongar word that translates to “the place where there are spidersâ€. However, this differs from the City of Stirling official meaning of the name Karrinyup on the website. It states the word means “the place where Kangaroos drinkâ€, possibly because it sounds much more pleasant and doesn’t inspire the fear that spiders often do. It was this contrary interpretation of the word ‘Karrinyup’ which provided the final spark of inspiration I needed for this composition. You see, when you listen to the opening, the theme jumps up and down through the horns, and represents the Kangaroo – Yongka. Whilst as the fanfare continues, you will notice the second theme – the crawling strings represent the spider – Kar. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did creating it. May it, and this new year, spark inspiration for you.

By Pat Metheny. By Pat Metheny. Arranged by Gregory Beyer. Folk,Jazz,Standards. Individual part. 9 pages. Published by Gregory Beyer (A0.499204).

This is a 5.0 marimba arrangement of Pat Metheny's solo baritone guitar rendition of Last Train Home as recorded on the album, One Quiet Night. It is transposed up a minor third (to the key of Ab major from F major) in order to accommodate the lowest notes of the baritone guitar (A1) on the 5.0 marimba (C2). Perhaps someday someone will make a 5.3 octave version of this in Metheny's original key. During the pandemic, I have deliberately chosen to take a deeper look at some of the music that moves me deeply. When I was a kid my next neighbor, Bob Holt, happened to be the local college music professor. He introduced me to a lot of wonderful music, including Pat Metheny’s album “Still Life Talking,†which features the song, “Last Train Home.†In 2003, Metheny released a solo baritone guitar album, “One Quiet Night,†on which “Last Train Home†makes a re-appearance. I’ve always thought that this version of the tune would make a great marimba project.

When I was little I used to sit on Mom's lap while she read me Bible stories. We would read them and look at the pictures and then I had a lot of questions. I remember in particular once picture of Herod's soldiers killing little babies in Bethlehem. I was horrified by what I saw. They were trying to kill the baby Jesus by killing every child that could possibly be Him. The discussions I had with my mom in those formative years helped mold me into the person I am today. I treasure those moments.... I still remember them.... do you? It's never too late to start the tradition of reading and talking together.

Feel the Spirit is an arrangement of four pre-Civil War spirituals which were sung by slaves inAmerica. These were
Christian songs which described Bible stories (Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho) or about living with the spirit
of God (Every Time I Feel the Spirit). Sometimes the spirituals described the hardships of slavery (Nobody
Knows the Trouble I've Seen). Most interestingly, some spirituals had hidden meanings. In Swing Low, Sweet
Chariot it appears that the singer is talking about dying and going to heaven, but in actuality, home refers to a
place of freedom, and crossing the river Jordan means overcoming the obstacles to freedom.

SKU: A0.1028226

Composed by Candace R. Lambert. Christian. Octavo. 19 pages. Candace R. Lambert #3452119. Published by Candace R. Lambert (A0.1028226).

Appropriate for church services, college, or professional groups.
Context: The piece receives its title from my little sister's nickname. Dia was born 10 weeks early and weighed less than 3 pounds. The doctors told us that she would not live. My father began to pray and certain scriptures came to his mind. Soon, he and my mother began to remind each other of these scriptures. Dia ended up making it. I tell her God must have something planned for her if she survived such a rough start.
Performance: The piece opens with a joyful piano solo followed by the higher voices' entrance. These are the mothers exclaiming their joy for the new coming baby. The lower voices then make their statement in their own melody. They are the fathers expressing the excitement of the chlid's birth. The piano takes a turn into the minor key. A soloist represents the doctor delivering the bad news as the rest of the choir makes waiting room sounds. Have people texting or talking on the phone, flipping through magazines, or rustling papers. The alto soloist then repeats the doctor's message. The higher voices began to weep and cry as the father begins to pray. The 3 basses (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) answer in scripture. The father begins to recite the scripture with God and soon the rest of the choir joins. The key modulates to the Major 3rd as the piano solo returns to represent the child living.

Composed by Sally Whitwell. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 15 pages. Sally Whitwell #757469. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1157142).

Written in the Stars -- text and music by Sally Whitwell Written in the Stars was originally conceived in the aftermath of the 2019-2020 bushfire season, the most destructive Australia has yet seen. At the time, we thought things couldn’t get worse, but then followed more extreme weather events, insect and rodent plagues, and a deadly pandemic that brought the world to its knees. All these things are connected, the result of humanity’s exploitative relationship with the planet and its other inhabitants. But we continue to deny the problems and to fail to act. As a species, in our more optimistic moments, we talk about having great opportunities to reinvent, that to live the status quo means that we will be faced with an untenable future. Talking about it is one thing but as far as I see it, we are not taking any opportunities to act. It is clear that we do not learn from our mistakes. As Spanish American writer George Santayana once said “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.†It is from this notion that this song was born. Written in the Stars is about society’s propensity to go through cycles of behaviour, never learning from the mistakes of the past. Written in the Stars was originally commissioned by Adelaide Chamber Singers, directed by Carl Crossin. Sally Whitwell January 2023.

By Duke Ellington. By Bub Miley and Duke Ellington. Arranged by Craig Peaslee. Jazz. Score and parts. 47 pages. Craig Peaslee Music #5718751. Published by Craig Peaslee Music (A0.944878).

A classic song from the Duke Ellington Orchestra arranged for a four horn jazz ensemble: Clarinet, Tenor Saxophone (doubling on Soprano Saxophone), Trumpet, Trombone and Rhythm Section (Guitar, Piano, Drums and Bass or Tuba).

Famous for the Bubber Miley distorted - talking - Trumpet parts, the arrangement boils down what Ellington's full ensemble was performing to just the four horns plus rhythm section.

The original Baritone Saxophone solo is written out for Trombone and the Clarinet solo is also written (both include chords for improvisation).

Features the Soprano Saxophone trio-soli (written out here for Clarinet, Soprano Sax and muted Trumpet).

Tempo marking calls for a much slower pace than in Ellington's original in order to get across the sexiness of the harmonies and lead lines.

Composed by Aaryn S. Ricucci-Hill. 21st Century,Classical. 26 pages. Abundant Silence #820608. Published by Abundant Silence (A0.1224504).

In 2022 I was commissioned to write a piece which would accompany a proposal submitted to the College Music Society conference in Boise, ID. Part of the proposal suggested music that celebrated the rich musical heritage of the Northwest. In looking around at what that meant, I discovered a curious fact about Boise: it has the only Basque heritage museum in the country. Suddenly the wheels got to turning!

Basquing (2022) seeks to invoke... bask, if one will, in the sounds and feelings of another time and place. The inspiration of the piece comes from the Basque region of France with quotations from folksong, fiddle music, and a general vibe of French impressionism.

The piece opens with the folksong Atzo Goizean, the lyrics to which invoke the folksy elements of village living (talking about waking to the thrush’s song, fathers arranging marriages, etc.). The urge to ‘word paint’ the folk song with it references to thrushes and partridges, is tempting, but the urge was avoided in this case, instead opting for a general “vibeâ€, or feeling. The next section avoids quotation altogether, instead opting to steep into the mystique environment created before. The last major portion of the piece utilizes what was billed (to me at least) as a Basque fiddle tune (the title lost as it seems the scholarly research on the subject and tunes that comprise the genre are lacking even by those who claim to have some knowledge of it). Assuming the best, however, the fiddle tune quoted in Basquing is meant to be a musical representation of familial resemblance to the fiddle music of the Pacific Northwest and how folk music of all varieties is at one time so specific yet at the same time broad in its understanding across cultures.

Commissioned in 2022 by Arthur Houle (pianist) and Joung Hoon Song (violinist) for the Pacific Northwest College Music Society Conference 2023 in Boise, ID and premiered at said conference on March 17th, 2023.
