The music was written by Henry Sullivan, the lyrics by Harry Ruskin. This song was published in 1929 and was included in the musical revue Murray Anderson's Almanac which ran for 69 performances at Erlanger's Theatre on Broadway in 1929. It is said that the song was written on-demand for John Murray Anders. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in many of our arrangements and we've also included a few left-hand fills to keep the tempo going! It's called 'Setting the Watch' and is inspierd by the Ripon Hornblower with the tradition going back over a thousand years to Saxon times when Viking raids were common occurrences and people lived in fear of their property, livestock and even lives being lost in night-time attacks. In 886, the English King was Alfred the Great and he made it his mission to visit his people bringing a message of safety and stability. In Ripon he granted the people a Royal Charter and gave them a symbolic horn as a gift, advising them that they should be always alert to the dangers of invaders. The people of Ripon decided to employ a night watchman that they called a “wakemen� to patrol from dusk until dawn ready to sound the horn gifted by the King should he spot any trouble approaching. For further reassurance, the wakeman sounded the horn at each of the four corners of the market place at 9pm every night to let the people know that he was on duty and they could sleep easily. This sounding of the horn at 9pm became known as setting the watch.

In no way does the title refer to the technical demands of the piece, which are considerable. Rather, it refers to the endlessly imaginative, energized, and constantly changing play that might be engaged in by four different, though like-minded children. Indeed, the inspiration for the quartet was my then two-year-old daughter Rachel, whose boundless energy and capacity for play I found (and still find) rather terrifying. Child's Play consists of three movements: Games (fast), Intermezzo: Sogni d'Oro (Dreams of Gold) (slow), and Dances (very fast). In Games, four energetic and well-rested players leap out of the starting blocks together and engage in sport of various kinds: running games, chasing games, teasing games, tag, echo games (Simon Says), races, and so forth, eventually returning to the unison from which they began. Intermezzo: Sogni d'Oro (Dreams of Gold) offers a quiet, episodic, dreamlike respite from the frenetic mood of Games. In Dances, the energized character of the first movement resumes, only faster. Dances is a perpetual motion movement in three parts, with a slower, more fragmented middle section sandwiched between a boisterous and frenzied dance of life. This movement ends much in the same way as the first movement began, bringing the circuit of the piece to a close. Child's Play was commissioned by, and is dedicated, with many thanks and great appreciation, to the Alexander String Quartet.

Much of Adele's improvisation at the end of the track is captured here, unlike some other published editions.Guitar One goes up to top G, but there’s no fingering as you may want to choose when to change position. Guitar Two, by contrast, is more straightforward though the first beat is often written to come early - at the back of the previous bar or measure.Whilst it would have been nice to swap the parts over at the phrase boundaries, the change of pitch and the way the melody overlaps the bar-lines mean that a changeover would spoil the flow and balance.The metronome mark is close to the speed of the original, but the lush tone of the guitar allows you to go a little slower if it makes for a tighter performance.The parts are laid out with extra sample pages at the front so that you can preview some of each part and some of the full score on screen before purchase.
