INTRODUCTION Breeze in The Hearts, Bloom in The World is a sonata for trombone and piano commissioned by trombonist Takenori Yoshikawa that premiered at Mr. Yoshikawa's recital in July 2010 with Iku Miwa on piano. Mr. Yoshikawa had requested me to compose a bold and spirited piece, which prompted me to write this sonata with four movements after much deliberation.In the original edition, the burden of the performance was a little too focused on the trombone due to the trombonist's heightened interest in the piece, and as a result, the piece became difficult to play. In this revised edition, I have reworked the balance between the trombone and the piano while preserving the length of the piece so that the music can be performed more effectively.<Performance notes>I. The repetitions of the gentle melody in the introduction should be played in a way that allows it to be heard from far away, while the theme that appears after that should sound majestic and brave.II. Nostalgia - Although this movement is in a minor key, the music seeks to depict a sense of nostalgia instead of sorrow. Despite its slow, triple-time rhythm, please ensure that the music progresses quietly without coming to a halt.III. Serenade - In this movement, the trombone's melody should have a smooth and lively rhythm like the cello in a string ensemble. Articulate the melody beautifully with grace and movement and never allow it to become too heavy.IV. The theme in this movement has a similar feel to that in the first movement, but lighter. Maintain a tempo that is not too fast and keep the music moving. In the coda section from F, the opening section of the first theme makes an appearance from time to time as the piece heads toward the end. Please maintain a constant tempo while articulating the notes in a loud and resonant manner.The piano part contains many sections throughout the entire piece that call for a deep, orchestral sound. The pianist should read these parts carefully from the score while supporting the trombone as much as possible.The word fuka in the Japanese title Fuka Sanrei refer to the flowers that bloom when the wind blows between two people and brings about various encounters between them. There is an optional double bass part that doubles contrabass to help fortify it if needed. This arrangement is simple enough for musicians with intermediate playing skills, but it does require good breath support for the many long tones, and it also has a bit of syncopated rhythms. Duration: 4 minutes.

It serves as a good basis for a variety of arrangements, contra facts, and improvisations.The audio sample is a jazz quintet: A slow swing jazz accompaniment from iReal Pro, combined with my duet tunes from Finale PrintMusic. In this sample, a flute takes the accompaniment (treble clef), with a baritone sax in the bass clef. The main tune (bass clef) is accompanied, making this an unusual duet lead sheet. For example, a flute may accompany a baritone singer. An option is to interchange the voice roles (e.g., main tune octave higher, accompaniment octave lower), or use one of the tunes of the duet by itself. I wrote this piece in honor of immigrants, in recognition of the courage it takes to move to a new country and learn a new language. New immigrants often go through difficulties and setbacks, including persecution from citizens of their adopted country. This, despite the recent immigrant ancestry of most of the persecutors, notably in the USA. In the subtitle of Immigrant Blues, I recognize my own immigrant ancestors, and also Anders LundegÃ¥rd, who, like my paternal grandparents, moved to the USA from Sweden. Anders helped me with this piece, with his reviews and comments. **Here are the lyrics for Immigrant Blues: 1. Moving to the U. S., far away. Life here is so bad, I will not stay. Talked to Mom and Dad, they said OK. I want to make a place for them some day. 2. First time in the States was no picnic. Half the time no work, and I got sick. Some folks try to help, while others scoff. I have friends, but others put me off. 3. Looking bright and able, that’s my plan. Taking ESOL classes when I can. Learning English is no easy chore, And I want my folks here, that’s for sure.   And I want my folks here, that’s for sure. Oh, yeah!

The title wasinspired by the big change that comes when one relocates 1,000 miles away from familiar territory to begin a new life.Although this kind of event is very exciting, it also can create pain from the absence of friends and family. The music isintended to sound bittersweet in nature because it's meant to reflect both of these things.I don't usually try to write in a specific form, as I feel that can hurt the natural flow of how the music wants to develop.However, this piece is indeed in anABAform. Almost all of the thematic material in the piece is written in a major key,but with the goal of sounding a little sad. While writing this, I was heavily influenced by the music of Ennio Morriconeand Dan Forrest. There is a short motive used in the B section of the piece that is similar to a motive used in variousfilm themes. Since I associate this motive with Morricone, and because he is one of my all time favorite composers, Idecided to dedicate this piece to him.

An advanced piece for pedal harp, about 12 minutes long, with lots of melodies and a variety of styles and tempos. It's in western classical harmony and structured as a melodic journey. There are sections with delicate handiwork/hand-work and a little bit of glissandi and pres de la table effects. Three sections in the middle are more extensive, one involving exuberant melodies, another having a waltz-like character, and the central one partly inspired by Weber's Andante and Hungarian Rondo (which I performed on the viola). My goal was to make the piece feel like one great cohesive experience instead of just a lot of little sections, and hopefully you will agree. My other goal was to provide melodies which will delight music-lovers, and package them together in a meaningful way. The PDF also includes composer's notes of musical analysis and the process I went through in writing the piece.

The individual tunes are in various folk styles appearing in a chronological order O’Connor says, not only represents the evolution of American folk music, but also mirrors his own family’s migration from Ireland and Holland to America. It traces the family’s route through the thirteen colonies initially, and then eventually West during WWI nearly 300 hundred years later. O’Connor wrote the pieces in a manner and style he felt his family could have heard along the way. The Suite begins with Irish music, perhaps similar to the music O’Connor’s family brought with them. Then in a thoughtful progression, he reveals music they must have encountered living in early America. Strings & Threads musically describes how folk music styles hundreds of years apart are interconnected – possessing a common thread – from an Irish reel to jazz.
