Wikipedia notes that, to develop the soundtrack, the composer, Miranda, and team visited Colombia—the setting of Encanto—to study the country's music. Consequentially, the album is rooted in genres such as vallenato, cumbia, bambuco and rock en español, making use of the traditional music instruments of Colombia, and incorporates salsa, tango, reggaeton and bachata styles alongside pop, hip hop, folk and musical theatre elements. In the film, the songs are performed by the Madrigals, who are a multigenerational family with magical powers granted to them by a miracle; the lyrical themes revolve around individuality, self-worth, transgenerational trauma and familial love. This arrangement has been specifically tailored for intermediate-level viola while retaining all of the original elements of the song, as well as some original interpretative elements. The lead line combines some of the different voices in the original song. The key has been changed from the original A minor/C major to the more viola-friendly B minor/D major, which changes the modulation halfway through the song from the very challenging Bb minor/Db major to the more friendly C minor/Eb major.

The Man That Got Away is a repertoire standard that was written for Judy Garland and later recorded by Frank Sinatra.  I wrote this version for one of my students who was auditioning to get into an Arts School. She was not a singer and not going into a vocal programme, but was required to do a vocal piece anyway as part of the audition process. Thus I have kept the vocal range limited to a comfortable 10th, from A4 to C5; most of it between Middle C and the next C. Further, this student had severe asthma and thus poor breath control. So I wrote this arrangement with short phrases, lots of caesurae, breath marks, rests, rubato, and a piano interlude just past the middle.  The interest lies in the constantly shifting moods from swagger, to blues, to smoky jazz, to angry declarations, to wistful melancholy, to chanted recitation, to expressive rubato. This is underscored by a piano part which incorporates all of the above into a contemporary jazz style of rich extended chords.  But you won't be thinking of any of these things when you perform this stunning piece because it just all works together to create a fresh, jazzy twist to this old classic.P.S. This piece was originally titled Istn’t it Enough, drawing inspiration from the famous passage from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I changed the wording slightly to be more encompassing of different modes of perception (thought is a broader concept than sight and the word think created better melodic material than the word see, using the method described below) I provided an alternate title to more clearly convey the meaning behind the piece. That is; that the only church that I will ever need is the one I find in musical expression and in the beauty of the natural world. Though Adams’ meaning was meant to convey the primary reasoning for his atheism-a reason that I use as well-I also see it as an admonishment of our need for constant stimulation. Adams felt-and I feel-that people need to take the time to slow down and enjoy life: we need to enjoy the beauty of the garden (both literally and metaphorically). That, quite simply, is what this piece is (or at least what it is to me). Among the compositional techniques that I used in this piece is one that I have been using quite a lot. I call it crypto-serialism. The basic concept is that I will take a piece of text (the Douglas Adams quote, in this case) and convert each letter to a number between 0 and 11 and then convert those numbers to musical pitches, where 0 = C, 1 = C#, etc. The technique offers me a way to draw actual musical ideas from the text itself, which I see as a means of creating a deeper connection to the text. The piece is dedicated to the Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocolypse: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett.

I said, Yes. I would be delighted to do so. He told me that the subject for this work would be Boston’s own landscape architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. Sure, I said, why not? Charles told me he had a poet in mind who would provide the text, Nancy Stevenson. I said, Great! The work is in four parts, following Ms. Stevenson’s poetic design. I wrote a marching music in Part One depicting Mr. Olmsted when as a child he walked from his home to his aunts and uncles who lived far away. As a young man, Mr. Olmsted went through many jobs until he decided that as a landscape architect he could make cities a better place for children and adults alike. The mayor of Boston hired him to do just that, to make Boston more livable. In Part Two, I wrote presto music depicting the dredging of the Charles River and the planting of trees along its shores. In Part Three, the text describes the Boston Emerald Necklace – the paths that lead from the Fens to the Arboretum to Franklin Park. For this section I chose music that is bucolic and pastoral, a setting that evokes the country side with a flock of sheep, complete with a shepherd and his dog. In the last section the text describes Mr. Olmsted’s dream that in his parks there would be tranquility and rest to the mind … a place where the rich and the poor would play together. The music returns to the legato march that began the work.
