The beginning sets a peaceful mood with a quiet modal tune, first in piano and then viola, but somber chords intervene.  Then God calls to Abraham three times, each time louder, the last time thunderously.  After a pause, the viola captures Abraham’s stunned and then agitated response, as he processes what he’s being asked to do.  Tragically resolved, he begins the trudging walk to his son’s doom, which builds to a climax in both instruments, culminating in God’s calling again to Abraham, this time to stay his knife hand.
