Mendelssohn’s wedding march is a ubiquitous piece for any seasoned wedding musician. A quick search online reveals that there are more than a few dozen arrangements of this work for string quartet alone! So why create another one? Many of the arrangements currently in circulation are of extremely poor quality, both from a musical and publishing standpoint. Too often they give little regard to what Mendelssohn actually wrote and are rendered as if the arranger was recalling the music by ear. My new arrangement was created with a fresh examination of the original orchestral score. Here are some key highlights: 1. It preserves the structural integrity of the music (i.e. same exact number of bars as the original) 2. Maintains a balance between the original context and rewriting the music idiomatically for string quartet. 3. Aims to be of high artistically yet playable by most string players above an intermediate level (There are double stops and a few triple stops but nothing unmanageable). 4. No unnecessary articulations, bowings or fingerings have been added. The basic spirit of the music is left untouched and skilled musicians can make their own interpretive decisions with fresh insight into the music. 5. A clean, high quality engraving with bar numbers added. An abridged arrangement of the first 29 bars of march is also available so don’t use a cheap, free arrangement online of this important work. The range does not go above the soprano top C (2 ledger lines above the treble clef) and the settings avoid the difficult transition a to b between the chalumeau and clarino ranges. The key signatures (as written) range from two flats to three sharps. The entire collection is available here as a set for $22.00 (15 easy clarinet trios) or, if preferred, the individual pieces are also available separately (at $2.50 each). As each piece comprises only one or two pages the players will be able to read directly from the scores, without the need for separate parts (which also gives the advantage of being able to see what the others are playing. It's not always easy to transform this kind of music into an idiom that sounds good as instrumental chamber music, however, this is part of my quest to develop a broad range of popular music that I can play live with a small group on the horn.This is great for university students and professionals... maybe even high school students. There are not a lot of great, challenging horn quartet arrangements out there, like this one is. This arrangement helps fill a niche for small ensemble in that horn quartet music typically lacks repertoire in most contemporary and rock genres. This one has a kit part included, which isn't necessary to perform this quartet, but might make it easier if a quartet to perform it with drums if they wanted to.The melody gets passed around a bit so it's fun and interesting for everyone. Score, parts and cover arts included. On a personal level, the composer is reminded of his own experiences camping in Northern Canada as a young man–a simpler and less demanding time. This piece formally begins the series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies–his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!–though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his first symphony; I envisioned, once my piece concludes, his beautiful drawn-out chords presenting themselves–the dawn of his special genius.About the Composer: Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator.
