In accepting this commission, my thoughts were to create a work that incorporated the rich history of Chautauqua and its pure, innocent, rural
Americana experience. Seeing its heritage was grounded in a nondenominational understanding of God, which incorporated both secular and
spiritual experience, it seemed fitting to arrange a work that bound these two ideals into one work. The arrangement opens with a stately expression
of valor, dignity, and innocence lost - developing gently through a series of tonal and textural adaptations of the hymn tune until it finds a stately tutti
expression for the ensemble. But the end is delayed by the arrival of a false cadence at rehearsal D, which embraces a 'river dance' with a variety of
percussive features. The idea here is one of 'beauty from ashes' and 'joy coming in the new mornings dew.' The reeds are now used to express the
bagpipe above the thrusts of the percussion. Soon, the hymn tune is heard again, supported by the rhythmic dance in reeds, brass, and percussion -
now filled with the joy of community participation. Each counter-melodic line is somewhat of a statement now - and, must be heard in its
uniqueness. It is as if the birds have begun to sing again, each in their own language, of the wonderment surrounding the new day. Hope has once
again sprung upon the community through music.
Take your time through the reminiscent, Americana moments, and enjoy the dance thoroughly!

The melody is split between the two staves to emulate both the lows and highs of Taylor Swift's voice. Whenever the melody is in the bass stave the stems are up, indicating that you should use your right hand for these notes. Throughout most of the piece, the left hand should be used to play those low fifths in the bass stave.

The tempo marking is just a suggestion, feel free to play at whatever pace that allows you to remain in control.

The song was inspired off of Franz Liszt’s Transcendental Etude No. 9 (Ricordanza).

Toss A Coin To Your Witcher immediately earned a following from the show's fanbase after airing in 2019. As for me, one of Faure's most enchanting songs. Much of it's original impression comes from the lulling piano accompaniment. I tried to capture as much of it while adapting it to the guitars limited scope (regarding pitch range and dynamics compared to a piano) focusing on fluidity and harmonic conformance. For some parts (which might be difficult especially for players with smaller hands) the guitar score offers alternative fingerings, feel free to use whatever single alternative bar fits your taste. The download contains a score and parts, as well as a guitar tab and chord diagrams for easier accessibility.

Edit: the most current download is a complete overhaul. It now contains two levels for guitar, an advanced close to piano notation and a new gig-proofed notation which is much easier to render (advanced intermediate level), both as score and tablature.

River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.

Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.

Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.

Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. Part of the beauty of writing a piece inspired by a river is that I hope you hear in it whatever the river means to you.
