I had a lot of fun writing this piece. The idea came from one of my composition friends from my time at University. He enjoyed writing a lot of anime style music - especially using the anime chord progression which is what I use in the composition. I didn’t want to the piece to sound too much like an anime opening so I did alter the chord progression a little here and there just to make it’s own thing.I am quite happy with how this piece turned out though, the chord progression does provide for some really nice and smooth voice-leading which makes the whole composition more seamless. There are a few different melodies in this piece although I did try to use the one melody and create the other ones based off of that. That is a skill I’m still working on and it really pays off when it’s done well.

Interspersed were my original orchestral interludes, what I intended to be a combination of beautiful, dramatic, and playful, with hints of recognizable Christmas tunes woven into the background. Festive Expressions was the resulting composition, which can be performed with or without Suzuki Soloists. It was premiered by Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra on December 7, 2013 with Tyler Goodrich White conducting over 100 Suzuki Soloists on stage.The Wind Ensemble arrangement, Satana Autumn, was created for Fred J. Allen and the Stephen F. Austin State University Wind Ensemble; it was intended as a gift in response to a wonderful piece he wrote for me when I was a public school teacher.

I tried to convey what I thought David wanted when he wrote this praise song. It moves at a very quick pace and is exciting to perform. Incorporating a full choir, brass quintet, and piano Psalm 100 can be a challenge to keep pace with the tempo. The secret is for the choir not to over-sing, emphasize the strong beats (as noted), and sing with a small mouth. Let it flow smoothly in phrases.       Psalm 100 will be a great praise and worship anthem and fits will for special occassions. The brass parts and score are sold as a seperate packet. Consequently, like so many Avenged hits, it plays quite well as an instrumental cover and can be adapted to some interesting instrumentations beyond the original 2-guitar, bass, drums format in which it was recorded.Some years ago, I performed this tune with a 4-piece band on my college recital and it was an absolute blast! The concept of creating a Marching Band arrangement for a Metallica song actually had occurred to me several years ago. The announcement of the official competition spurred me to action, and Hey, Guess What? I still missed the deadline. Perhaps an underachiever of the Metallica Family, but a member nonetheless.  The arrangement is based on my Piano version of ORION (available on this site, of course). It follows the original closely, with some embellishments added.  Some of the soli playing is more challenging than many arrangements. The mood is more of a Concert piece for Marching Band, with plenty of energy, but more musical complexity. The PDF has been improved and replaced. The score is on Tabloid (11x17) size paper and the parts are on Letter (8.5x11) size. The parts will need to be trimmed for use. I believe it justly expresses the power of Metallica's music. This is not eligible for the 2023 competition. First: your group could play it anyway. Second: I will be on a quest to have it added for next year's version.  I anticipate this year's competition will go very well.

As a teenager, I was definitely exposed to a fair amount of their music for some reason. It's not always easy to transform this kind of music into an idiom that sounds good as instrumental chamber music, however, this is part of my quest to develop a broad range of popular music that I can play live with a small group on the instrument I love - the horn.This is great for university students and professionals... maybe even high school students. There are not a lot of great, challenging horn quartet arrangements out there, like this one is. This arrangement helps fill a niche for small ensemble in that horn quartet music typically lacks repertoire in most contemporary and rock genres. The texts in this version is not sung but recited by a narrator accompanied by two flutes, two harps and celesta. During my undergraduate career at The University of Akron, like many college students, I went through a year of trying to discover what I really wanted to do. In my sophomore year, I dropped from Music Education, and picked up a double major in Trumpet Performance and Composition with a minor in Jazz Studies.  After 2 semesters of taking nearly 30 credit hours and a need to change my embouchure, I decided to focus on trumpet and come back to composition later. After finishing my BM in Trumpet Performance, I decided to go for a MM in Composition.  This piece was one that I wrote for entry into the graduate program.  To this day, it is still one of my favorite compositions!  It's a lot of fun, very difficult and taxing, but also very musically interesting.  It melds together several interesting melodic lines and motifs, and each player gets a chance to shine.  There are also a lot of great ensemble moments where lines get passed through the entire quintet and turn it into one instrument.  It's a piece for advanced players for sure, but a great feature for any group willing to give it a go!Brass QuintetAdvancedApprox. 6:30Visit zackrichards.com for more from this composer!

Dan is a prize-winning composer and arranger, and was the staff arranger for the Countess of Wessex's String Orchestra for many years. danedwardscreative.com This is an arrangement like no other!Pachelbel's Canon is a hugely popular piece, but unfortunately it was not written for the string quartet. The original is for three violins and basso continuo, so this presents quite a few problems when string quartets attempt to play it.  - Firstly, the 'viola' part is extraordinarily high, not only making it very difficult to play, but making that one voice stick out much more than the other three in the highest parts of the piece. Usually the high bits are just transposed down an octave but this isn't very satisfying. My solution in this arrangement is to swap the voices of the canon around so that the viola always plays the lowest part. Have a look at the score to see what I mean - the viola part isn't transposed, but it never goes above an E on the A string. - Secondly, the first two bars should have harmony, as there should be a keyboard instrument accompanying the cello. To compensate for this I've added some simple harmony in small note heads at the start, before each canon entry. - Thirdly, the cellist always gets lost in this piece. I know because I am a cellist and I always get stressed out towards the end of this piece. So I've added a reduced-size violin 1 part to the cello part so the cellist can follow along and know exactly when the piece is going to end!  Includes a full score (6 pages), and complete set of parts. Keith wrote the music and produced the recordings over several years after the unexpected death of his brother Ken in January of 2010. The process of grieving an unimaginable loss coupled with writing and recording music as a tribute to his late brother was extremely difficult and at times painful. The resulting work is honest, pure, and for Keith, a healing endeavor. This is a collection of fiddle tunes that I have written at different points since I began playing Irish music over 3 decades ago. The collection includes typical types of tunes, including reels, jigs, hornpipes, waltzes. There are a few tunes that don't fall exactly into those catagories, including an old time tune, a quasi cajun tune, a slow tune that is quasi Scottish, and one air that was originally written for solo cello, and is more of a concert piece for cello and fiddle, in a folk style. There are short descriptions of the tunes that tell a bit about my life, where I lived and traveled, and what I was doing.  Most of the tunes were written at a specific place, some on trips, and some at home. Memories of the places and the people there are woven into the sound. I sincerely hope you enjoy this music!
