There are 150 psalms in the Bible, each one originally meant to be sung; and so they were for most of the last 3,000 years, beginning at the Jerusalem Temple. They were adopted as the primary song text of the early church as evidenced by Col. 3:16 and maintained in the Western church throughout medieval times. Psalms were the featured texts of most of the Reformers and were the sole mode of sacred singing among the first American settlers. Of late, hymns and choruses and popular songs with human texts have almost entirely replaced the singing of God’s word in many churches. This scarcity of Psalms in the Church’s song is a great loss which frequently compels me to do what I can to promote their increase.

C. It offers students an opportunity to explore the odd meters he commonly used to formulate many of his works, only on an easier level for advanced middle school and high school players. Audiences will also enjoy this diversion from the typical meters used in most jazz arrangements. Although scored for full jazz ensemble, the arrangement will work for smaller groups that do not have the full instrumentation. Auxiliary cow bell and tambourine parts will add to the flavor that was so commonly used during this era of pop music. Try to get the70’s flavor by using as close to an organ sound as possible, but a piano may be substituted. . There is 36 measure improvisation section that uses three chords, one for every 12 measures, and jazz scales are included in all the wind parts to encourage students to improvise.

This version is taken from the Vienna Boys Choir for both the lyric and the melody. I’ve arranged it for tenor and treble where the treble takes the melody for the first two verses but for the final verse the tenor takes over the tune while the treble sings what might be considered a descant. As the transcriptions in this book are written in standard notation and tablature, any type of ukulele, from soprano to baritone—as well as the top four strings of the guitar— can be used to play them. Most of the pieces are in standard gCEA or GCEA tuning; the seven pieces in the second section of the book, however, require low-G tuning to render the counterpoint as written. It’s also possible for guitar and baritone uke players to read the tablature provided. The music will sound a perfect 4th lower than the notation, but as there was no standard pitch in the time of the Renaissance guitar, modern players should feel no obligation to play this music at fixed pitch. Treat People With Kindness The idea of this arrangement was to make it as accessible as possible for all playing standards, and singers, and lots of percussion! Treat People With Kindness is a song by British singer and songwriter Harry Styles, recorded for his second album Fine Line (2019). It was used in the 2022 M&S Christmas Advert, which my youth band, Kearsley Youth Brass Band was honoured to be part of, and inspired me to do this arrangement. This fun and easy arrangement is suitable for any ensemble, but a brass band is what I had in mind. The choir arrangement works alongside, or on its own too. There is an EASY part for beginners to play too, suitable for training band members to join the senior band perhaps?
