The key signatures (as written) range from two flats to three sharps. The entire collection is available here as a set for $22.00 (15 easy clarinet trios) or, if preferred, the individual pieces are also available separately (at $2.50 each). As each piece comprises only one or two pages the players will be able to read directly from the scores, without the need for separate parts (which also gives the advantage of being able to see what the others are playing. The Devil His Due is a response to saxophonist Peter Verdonck’s love for Death Metal Music.  Not being tuned into that kind of rock, I imagined what it night sound like if written for saxophone and piano.  As a starting point, I began with the lowest, most raucous sound I could imagine for the combination of bari and piano.  From there, I organized the piece numerically around occult numbers, all the while emphasizing the devil’s interval, the tritone, and the muscular sound of metal power chords made of fifths and octaves.  The appeal of writing devil music has appealed to composers since at least the Romantic era (composer/violinist Niccolo Paganini even tried his best to look devilish), and my piece is an attempt at the same.

Primary IV Class. I wanted to see what would happen if she had to do a left hand accompaniment with less (than usual) blocked or broken chords. To compromise, I gave it a lullaby feel, which worked amazingly well in a recital setting! The main theme recap was especially difficult for her, but she persevered and got it down. It's a beautiful and sweet rendition. Pedal and fingering suggestions are included.

This elegiac piece was composed by me in the wake of the awful massacre on Friday, November the 13th of Parisian citizens by murderers of French and Belgian background belonging to the self-named terrorist Islamic State. As a college student in London in the 1950's I invariably took in the City of Light during my many summer holidays spent in Europe, usually accompanied by my best friend, Gerard, of Lyons. He taught me how to savor the best that a French restaurant had to offer, as his mother was a Cordon Bleu when it came to the cuisine of that fair land. We also visited Brussels in Belgium and the French Riviera and parts in between to partake of the various excellent wines that the region had to offer. En route to settling in the USA two decades later my family and I spent a few days in Paris, so that I could convey to my wife and three girls what France had done in contributing its language and culture to so many parts of the world, including out native India. In some small way, I offer this effusion of grief in a positive, if not joyous vein, because that's how the melancholic chords end - in a tierce de picardie from A minor to A major.

Instrumentation:FluteClarinet in BbHorn in FViolinViolaCelloDoiuble bassSeptet, opus 77 … “Variations on a Shaker Tune� was commissioned by Mark Ludwig for his educational series in the Western Berkshires of Massachusetts.  When he approached me about writing a “theme and variations� work for the purpose of illustrating musical form, texture and orchestration to a young audience, I thought what better thing to do than to use as a theme a Shaker hymn from near Hancock Shaker Village.  As it turns out Deborah Leah Rentz, a mezzo-soprano who is Mark’s assistant at the Terezín Music Foundation, has been researching into and transcribing from a Shaker Hymnal, ca. 1850, created and compiled for the Hancock Shaker Village.  (Deborah’s project is sponsored by the Hancock Shaker Village and the Richmond Performing Series.)    So I asked her to put on a DAT tape (those were the days before CDs or digital distribution… ) a number of these hymns for me.  I immediately fell in love with the very first one on the tape, “Grateful Remembrance.�  It had a soulful, melancholic core; an almost “bluesy� feeling to it.  In this performance, Deborah will sing the hymn a cappella at the beginning.    Then, the seven variations will follow.I. Grateful Remembrance … An instrumental version of the hymn.II. Grateful Chanting … Featuring the B-flat clarinet in a pentatonic “chant� setting.III. Russell sang, played piano, and played tenor horn on the recording.
