He and his fellow students were working on a special project studying contemporary composers whose work engages with climate change, environmentalism, and the natural environment. The students had been asked to read a chapter from David Haskell’s Sounds Wild and Broken and had further been given the following direction to guide them: “we are assigning each of you to a project in which you will seek out song repertoire from a living composer whose work responds to climate change or the natural environment, heightening our connection to and awareness of the natural world. This topic has arisen from a call to Bard faculty to #MakeClimateAClass: Bard faculty are urged to use our collective power as educators to engage with the climate change crisis.�Jun wrote to me that he was drawn to my music and asked whether any of my songs might fit within this subject area. At the time I had plenty of songs that spoke of the natural world, but none I could categorize as specifically dealing with the class’ more narrow focus, so I offered to write this song on a poem by one of my favorite poets, Carl Sandburg, who even by the early twentieth century was noting the degradation of the natural environment and its impact on life of all kinds trying to adjust to changed circumstances brought on in one way or another by man. I quickly found the poem Buffalo Dusk, seeing how strongly it speaks of the extinction of species and the loss that represents. Jun and his teachers remarked what a “beautiful and sad poem� it was, so in short order I was pleased to present this song to Jun, who gave Buffalo Dusk its first performance in April of 2023 at the Bard Conservatory.

Writing to his brother Modest on 18/30 January 1877, Tchaikovsky mentioned that the violinist Iosif Kotek had ordered a piece from him for a forthcoming concert. Four days later Kotek wrote to Tchaikovsky: Thank you in advance for the waltz; it will surely be wonderful, as is everything that you compose... this shall be a piece to impress everybody. In another letter from mid/late February, we read: Incidentally, about the waltz. Why force yourself if you are tired? Of course, I would be delighted and infinitely glad if you were to write the waltz, especially since it is for me. I am still very glad that you have even started to think about this.In the period from March to August, we find no further references to work on the Valse. But, given that in March and April, Tchaikovsky wrote his Fourth Symphony, and that in May he was completely absorbed in composing the opera Yevgeny Onegin, it is likely that by this time the Valse had already been completed.It seems that the waltz was partly or wholly orchestrated by Kotek after Tchaikovsky completed the version for violin with piano. This is suggested by two letters from Kotek to Tchaikovsky: in October 1878, the violinist reported to Tchaikovsky on an unsuccessful performance of the piece: Could my instrumentation be the reason that the waltz did not please?, and early in 1879 he wrote: I think that I badly orchestrated the Waltz ... what extraordinarily empty sounds!. The Hand of You is an arrangement of the 1920 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond.  The lyrics are a tender love story about how throughout our relationship everything is fine as long as I can touch the hand of you.  In order to emphasize this simple and powerful emotion, for the first verse I simplified the original ballad's thick chords into a more shaped and expressive two part writing, just single notes in each hand; then for the second verse I did a reharmonization of the melody, adding some simple harmony and octaves for the climax; then back to two part for a slower, softer ending.   I also wrote a new slow introductory section with my own lyrics and melody that is based on what follows.  An incredibly beautiful piece, this is perfect for any wedding today, whether vintage or modern.  4 page score; 2:15 minutesI have published it in 3 different vocal ranges on this site:  High - low E to high F; Medium - middle C to high D; Low - low A to high B.   The MP3 recording is of the Medium Voice version.  This piece is also found in my book, Vintage Wedding Songs, a collection of 5 songs which is also available on this site.

This new 2022 piece is titled Pieknosc which translates to beauty in Polish, the origin of my last name. I got married in July 2021 and this song was considered to be what my wife would walk down the aisle to. We ended up choosing a different selection, but I still was happy with how the composition turned out. It is a joyous piece that begins with simple arpeggios that have a forward motion as guests enter. The theme then develops and gets faster and more involved as the wedding party begins to walk. It is most triumphant when the bride is walking down the aisle. When she reaches the end of her walk, with her father next to her, an important moment happens. He gives her away to the groom as the groom's parents watch nearby. They watch their children join together as one.
