In this poem, the author seems to question the capacity of humans to fully understand the universe because we are completely enveloped in the world we inhabit. Only by stepping outside of our world and looking into our “deeper hearts� can we achieve the perspective needed to know what is true and real. I was drawn to this text (which I have abridged for this setting) by the image of the rising bird, represented by the solo cello. The florid cello part is contrasted with a simpler, chorale-like texture in many of the choir’s passages.

Hear 30 second clip, beginning at measure 1.  Arrangement about 1 min 30 secs performance time.  This arrangement has a surprise ending, so the title needs to be just Angels.  The chords bring wonderful emotions which climax at m 52, followed by the surprise ending, the heart-swell.  Could be done by YWIH, high school age girls or Women's Choruses.  Use for shows, but not for Competition.  Some churches might allow it for Mother's Day services.  Feedback would be appreciated.  After thinking about ANGELS, I HAVE TO TELL YOU the most important line in the song.  After the Daddy tells the child what angels are, he says, They call them angels in Heaven (beautiful spot in the son), but we call them MOTHERS down here.  Such a tear-jerker, I think!!

The tiny edelweiss (it means noble white) flower is indeed a prominent symbol of Austria, present on many things Austrian you would find in any souvenir store across the country. Edelweiss was a late addition to the Sound Of Music score; Richard Rodgers thought Capt. Von Trapp needed a song to sing to his country as he fled the Nazis. It was also the last song of the Rodgers and Hammerstein collaboration before Hammerstein died. This arrangement features an echoic yodeling at beginning and end. It's scored for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC (trombone is more forceful than necessary, although I've included the part with this package) and tuba.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate.
