What happened when I discovered and developed a hyperfixation on an emo Christmas song in the middle of May during the pandemic's lockdown in 2020? I made sheet music of it, of course. And listened to the song for hours. This is an instrumental version of Christmas Drag, originally written by Dallon Weekes when he was still part of the band called The Brobecks. The purpose of this sheet music is to serve as the background music for a voice who will then perform the singing part. This does not contain the solo melody of the song, however, I will be adding the melody on a separate file and make sure to keep my followers updated. There are multiple versions of this song, but the one which inspired me to make sheet music was the version by Dallon from 2019 when the duo idkHOW performed it.

I improvised this gentle piece first for the Communion of the memorial service of Lithuanian journalist Rokas Zilinskas on June 10, 2017 at Vilnius University St John's church .hen I came back home and started to transcribe it to the Sibelius notation software from this video. Although the tempo is rather slow, the process was painstakingly difficult. So I decided to improvise it fresh, this time straight to the Sibelius.What came out was a shorter version (ca. 5 minutes of duration) gentle piece suitable for Communion or recital. I dedicate it to Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra, organist, improviser, composer, pedagogue, mentor, friend.The soft strings remind me of Angels flapping their wings. The dialogue between two flutes is like two Seraphims talking to each other in thought. Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. This piece explores the arrogance and emotions that I associate with the work as a whole, but particularly in Lucifer’s ego. The MP3 given here is just the render off of staffpad. Enjoy! The process of gestation for In Search of Lost Meaning took more than 40 years. It is a reflection on our relentless search for meaning, as perspectives change over long periods of time. I started working on the first movement - Abandoned Dreams - in 1977, when I was still in Romania. It was initially a cry against the limitations that Communist regimes inflict on people's dreams and free spirit. More than 40 years later, now living in Texas, I found a manuscript containing the first three movements, transformed them by adding a new perspective, reflecting on my adolescent dreams and what happened to them over time. And then, in 2021 I added the last movement - Never Look Back - closing the loop with an Orphic attempt to focus on the present and look into the future without regrets.

I was living in Green Bay following my graduate studies and I was teaching private voice lessons at Appleton West High School with my brother and his wife at the request of the choral director, Kevin Meidl. Kevin was also the director of the Appleton Boychoir and one year he asked me to sing the solo part of this carol for a recording they were making. My arrangement of this carol is rather straightforward with very little altering of the basic rhythms found in the original tune. However, the melody in the first verse is found among triplet figures and therefore one must be sure to bring out the important notes. There is a dance-like quality to the music, reminiscent of a gigue from the Baroque period. Following a brief reprise of the opening material the melody shifts to the left hand, starting out as a single note and soon joined in harmony. To me, it represents the page and the king from the story as they walk through the cold, winter night to bring food and fuel to the peasant living near the mountain. The melody then moves back to the right hand, but is now played in half notes indicating the difficult terrain and the snow they must traverse causing them to move more slowly. The left hand rumbles below as a reminder of the wind blowing and the snow swirling about them. The page, fears he cannot go on, but the king tells him to walk in his footsteps and all will be well. Soon, monarch and servant are moving swiftly to their destination. The music slowly fades as they pass into the mountain’s shadow only to grow once again as they arrive at the poor man’s home. The final chords ring out as the door is thrown open and they step inside to share what they have brought.

As a cellist, it occurred to me that rest of my trio might like to play along, so one morning I felt inspired to create this arrangement! It had to be relatively simple, so the cello melody was easy to follow, but also add some harmonic interest here and there. I hope this version will be a fun way for the entire group to participate in what would normally be a solo venture.
