It's not simply an inversion but the same relationship of black and white keys so that the 'feel' of the left hand duplicates the right hand original. One may inspect Vincent Persichetti's 'Seven Mirror Etudes' to see how this works; in his pieces the LH is a mirror of the RH. But in mine there are two mirrors, so to speak: each hand is a mirror of what the opposite hand has in the Chopin original. The result is somewhat odd, since major triads become minor and tonal relationships are altered.

The Trumpet Polka, first published in 1856 as part of the Jullien Military Band Journal is a typical composition composed for and used as dance music during the Victorian era. It employees both trumpets and cornets, showcasing the trumpets. The form is that of a dance piece, with large repeated sections designed to be choreographed by a large group of dances, an activity popular at the time. While there is much known about Herman Koenig (1815-1870), there is much that is still somewhat of a mystery, like exactly where he was born and died. What is known is that he was perhaps the �rst cornetist who was indeed an international star. Born in Germany, he became well-known in London as a featured soloist in Louis Jullien’s famous Drury Lane Orchestra in the 1840s. His travels took him to America in 1853 with Jullien in what was the �rst major tour of a European orchestra in America. He also played violin, was a composer and publisher, a music educator, and he helped design and market a cornet, what is known today as the Koenig Cornet.

Movement I: “Family Vacations.� Fond memories of childhood vacations as well as leading out on road trips as a father, are reflected by the excitement of this movement. Feel free to reminisce on your own family trips as you listen to or perform this movement. Movement II: “Jovial Banter.� I was going to call this movement “Roughhousing,� but that is only part of what this playful piece conjures. Besides wrestling my five boys (with my one girl amusedly watching off to the side), friendly joking with friends about rival universities, and playing harmless pranks on friends and family, all seem to be rolled up into this truly jovial movement. It has its own tricks and surprises to one who has never heard it before. Movement III: “Holiday Foods.� This waltz displays more elegance and structure than most of the other movements. It primarily elicits memories of the distinctive Thrower Christmas feasts, for which we created a unique tradition. Our yuletide banquets hail from a different country every year. Through the decades, we have discovered and adopted many international favorites that we continue to enjoy! Note the middle section of the waltz gets a bit spicy… Movement IV: “Pets.� Though as an adult I have not had the pleasure of enjoying personal pets, my youngest son developed an affinity for YouTube videos about funny cats and dogs. Nevertheless, my favorite childhood pet was “Blackie,� the splendid satin feline featured on the cover of this work. Pets are often quirky and extremely fun, as is this music. If it doesn’t put a smile on the listener’s face, someone in the line of musical communication may have failed. Movement V: “Sharing God’s Wonders.� Slow and wondrous, the music in this movement yearns to be shared. The theme, though only somewhat related to the other variations, strays to its own content after the first motivic notes. The melody is borrowed from a 2010 band composition of mine titled “Tribute to Joel Robison,� an ancestor, and a Texas hero. One passion I have enjoyed through the years is family history, truly a God-given legacy from which I draw much inspiration. Movement VI: “Personal Triumphs.� Indeed a subject to celebrate, triumphs of self-mastery, conquests over difficult tasks, and achievements of monumental goals all prompt me to break out in triumphant fanfares!

There is also an outro. About The Sheet MusicThe sheet music is basically a transcription of my recording. It contains jazz chord symbols and plentiful of articulations as well as some dynamic markings. My Arranging WorkflowI have different approaches for creating solo piano arrangements of songs. The one I took here is as follows. First I come up with different ideas, try them out, and after a while settle on those I like best. Once I practiced and internalized those ideas I press record and hope for the best. Before the final version is done, I record myself many times over. This gives me the opportunity to improve upon each version until I have one that I feel comfortable with.Recommendations For Learning The SongI recommend that you first listen to my performance while reading along in the sheet music. This way you get a better understanding about the phrasing and the rhythmic feel.You may want to spend a little time just vamping a few bars to get into the groove. When that feels good move on to different sections.The bridge is different in feel because it is based on stride piano rather than blues. Stride piano features big jumps in the left hand and big intervals between the outer notes (up to a 10th). Should you have difficulty in playing those big intervals (smaller hands will make this hard) you may roll the notes and use the sustain pedal.Is This Arrangement For You?This solo piano arrangement is for every pianist who would like to try playing Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town in a more bluesy-jazzy style. Dependent on what your specialty is musically speaking, you made benefit from it in different ways. What is Hanon? The ‘Hanon Virtuoso Pianist’ is a collection of piano finger exercises designed to give equal strength, agility and flexibility to all five fingers of both hands. Written by Charles-Louis Hanon sometime in the 1800s, these exercises without doubt have become one of the most widely used techniques by today’s pianists. In my opinion these are the best finger exercises available. One really great thing about these exercises is that they are applicable to both absolute beginners and advanced players alike, particularly as the reading ability required is minimal. Whatever your ability, these exercises will help improve your technique and finger strength. Having been written well over 100 years ago, the original work is now in the public domain and therefore digital copies can be acquired free of charge on the internet. However, most of these are very poor quality and the instructions are mainly in French or Russian - neither of which work too well for me! For the full version I personally recommend the ‘Alfred’ Edition edited by Allan Small which is clear and has instructions in English. So why do I need this book? The whole point is to make it easy to read and to reduce page turns - less is more! In the full version the first 30 exercises take up fifty pages whereas here there are three exercises per page for the first 20, then two per page for the next 10, reducing the fifty pages to just twelve. I initially produced this for my own use only but figured that others may like to take advantage of what I’ve done. Does this mean that the print is just smaller? No, not at all. If you are familiar with these exercises you will know that they are repeated patterns which ascend and descend for two octaves diatonically. To condense and simplify them and consequently eliminate an enormous amount of page turns I have shown: the all-important fingering on the first pattern (as per the original)then the repeated second patternthen ‘changeover’ patterns between ascending and descending - which are sometimes slightly differentthen finally the last pattern of each exercise which again is often very slightly different. I have also written them two octaves apart (for easy reading) and only shown them for one octave instead of two. In practice they should be played one octave apart and ultimately be practiced for two octaves. These pieces are like little objects that are simple and direct, yet slightly eccentric. They often seem to be based on traditional notions of harmony or phrasing, but they don’t always get those aspects exactly right. It’s as if what appears to be common little figurines, upon closer inspection, reveal themselves to be more varied, colorful, complex and unpredictable than a quick glance might reveal. I - Mutable Phrase This piece sounds a bit obsessive because all the phrases begin the same way. It almost sounds like somebody repeating a simple one-phrase statement, but constantly changing it with the hope of writing a perfectly nuanced phrase. II - Sparks in Emptiness The use of the sostenuto pedal in this piece creates an effect of reverberating empty space. Within that space, little bursts of energy begin appearing. It sounds like flashes of light in an empty dark space. III - Silent Blue Tides This piece is based on a slowly moving and somewhat unpredictable chord progression. A duo of simple melodies then floats on that chord progression, rising and falling with the moods of that large blue sea.

The degree of virtuosity is relatively low, but nevertheless not suitable for absolute beginners. Technically, the main characteristic of this piece is the polyrhythm 2 against 3: the melody subdivides the quarter in 2, and the accompaniment plays triplets. In this sense, an answer to Carl Czerny's polyrhythmic studie in E major. Please use abundant pedal when playing this piece. The idea is to generate a cloud of sound, not a machinal pattern. The sound character of this piece should be closer to Debussy than to Scarlatti. The initial indication scorrevole (fleeting) should orientate the character and the sound quality, the touch. Fermatas and caesuras should add time to the bar, like breathing in. In bar 8 (end) the silence is only in he left hand: the note of the right hand shouldn't be interrupted. This is actually clear if one read the rhythms carefully, but my experience tells me that it is prudent to underline this particular point. In bar 16 (and similar places), left hand: it is the central melody what should be in foreground, not the bass. Imagine that the melody is played by a cello or viola, and the bass by a double bass (or better: a bassoon). Try to achieve a different timbre and to separate therefore both layers. The title refers to this poem: Sum venti ingenium breve Flos sum, scilicet, aeris …… Sum blandum, petulans, vagum, Pulchrum, purpureum, et decens, Comptum, floridulum, et recens. The text of this song describes shaking off the snow to sing cheerfully and to embolden oneself against the wind and weather despite whatever woes might be stirring in one's heart. This transcription for clarinet quartet rotates the melody through the ensemble, giving equal weight to each of its four members. The transcription was originally completed as part of a set of adaptations from Schubert's Lieder; when grouped with the other transcriptions in the set (Gretchen am Spinnrade, Die Forelle, and Der Leiermann) it functions well as the fast emphatic final movement in a suite.

Sarabande - Apparently a notorious dance for it's day, having been banded in Spain by Philip II in 1590.  This Sarabnde is written in C minor, in 3/4 meter, and a tempo set to 1/4 note = 44.  Moody and somewhat dark, it will not be what your listeners will be expecting.  A haunting melody is passed from various instruments over pizzicato strings then the orchestra as a whole. Approximate length 3 minutes and 51 seconds.
