Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Originally written for SATB chorus and strings, Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. In this setting a woodwind quartet plays what was originally the choral part. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the quartet and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes with an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered as a choral work in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11. Contains full score and parts.

Once I learned the techniques name, my fascination with it grew. In my research, I found that the photographs I was drawn to the most were those of out of focus city lights, and out of focus Christmas lights. One had a frantic beauty, the other a more calming comforting beauty. All beautiful in their own unique way. I wanted to capture in music what the photographer captured in film. A Mohigan Band Overture  was commissioned by the Morgantown High School Band, in Morgantown, WV in January 2022, honoring their upcoming 100 year anniversary of the band program.  Through the last century, the band has been featured in many national appearances, including, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.  This stylistic dramatic piece is built on the architecture of an overture in musical theater, or a ballet.  Overture, meaning “opening� is usually an instrumental piece at the beginning of the show performed by the orchestra.  Overtures usually contain bits and pieces of tunes which are heard during the opera or ballet.  It prepares the audience for what is to come.   This piece does the same.  It contains four songs which are iconic to Morgantown High School and their band program.  Those songs are the Morgantown High School Pep Song, The Morgantown High School Alma Mater, God Has Created A New Day (sung during their band camp at breakfast time), The Johnny Appleseed Song (sung during lunch time at their band camp).  These four songs represent a plethora of memories for the students and directors of the program.  Even included is a small musical kick line, a nod towards the Mohiganettes and Majorettes of the Morgantown High School Band.

So, let's see how far they can be layered, stretched, and interwoven to create some nicely contrasting harmonic and melodic colors. OK, it Might take a BIT more work that the title suggests. Irony is IN right now... The saxes state the theme in octave unison, while the brass comment and accompany. Then the saxes take over for a full chorus of soli. None of the phrases is more than three measures in length, so the players can blow through without blowing themselves out. The soloists are the trumpet, accompanied by a trombone background, and the piano, with saxophones behind it. SampleSolos are provided. The trumpet shows how Woody Shaw might have played this piece with pentatonic scales, a bit of a contrast to the tonal nature of the changes. The piano has a rapid, multi-noted solo with lots of chromatics, with fingerings, to show what the Tatum-style of pianistic technique is all about. Running time is just over 4 mins at suggested tempo. The rhythm section Uni-Part is included with every GateWay Edition Jazz Ensemble Series chart. Drum part is notated as heard on the audio clip.
