She recently found a boyfriend who is also a cellist, Bennet Huang. They have been dinner guests at our home many times. So, when I ran out of projects to do in the early summer of 2022, I decided to write a duo of two cellos for them. In my search for inspiration, I discovered that Ermmano Wolf-Ferrari (1876 - 1948) wrote a number of nice duets for violin and cello. The one that really intrigued me was his Introduzione e balletto. And since my wife, Kristin Beckwith, is a ballet teacher who has only recently retired from teaching at the Boston Ballet School, I thought this would be a nice gesture to dedicate this work to her. In this collection of songs, Monteverdi, for the first time, starts to bring small groups of songs (2 or 3) to form a 'Scena - a collection with similar words or on a similar theme or by the same poet and keeping them as a little group within the book of madrigals. The 17th song, Io pur verrò begins as follows: I will come when I am thirsty and you will have my thirst for love. It concludes the second 'scena' within this book, a group of three linked songs (Nos 15-17) which is also available as a single download as the singer conquers his lady's reluctance.As with all of Monteverdi's vocal music, it translates really well onto instruments. It's essentially a solo instrument tone poem that describes someone staggering home after a long night of drinking out, along the way dodging a train and instigating some cops that pursue him, then stumbling upon a carnival that rather promptly boots him out because of his provocative behavior. He eventually finds his way home, now able to rest after a bizarre night of debauchery.

It could be played on mandolin, I suppose, but it’s a bit fiddley. Performance tip: try picking this with your finger, rather than with a plectrum; the 2-, 3- and 4-note chords can be played as broken chords, which makes the whole tune rather more interesting (and more of a challenge!).Appledore is a very pretty village in Kent, just north of Romney Marsh.
