This arrangement was made for a mid-beginner student working in Level 1/2 of Alfred's Masterwork Classics, Primary II Class. Great exercise for counting tied eighth notes. But the truth is, when a student knows the song, sometimes the counting goes straight out the window! My student ended up learning this in about two weeks. We were both surprised! Published by Fresh Air (A0.1023023). Just for Joe is based on a simple four bar repetition originally devised on my thumb piano and played as a lullaby to get my infant son, Joe, to sleep. I later developed a slow melody, on top of the thumb piano continuo, sung with some (not very good) words. When out local amateur dramatics group put on an adaption of A Midsummer Night's Dream it was used as a song with Clarsach accompaniment during the scene where the fairy queen, Titania, is lulled to sleep by the other fairies. Finally, when we put on the concert at our local village hall to raise funds for a new piano, I arranged it for Thumb Piano, Violin, Cello and Piano with a third line for the Violin in addition to the continuo on Thumb Piano and melody on Cello. The Violin and Cello were played by two very talented young players with the technique and skill to allow the un-amplified thumb piano to be heard against the Violin. Despite putting this together on the day before the concert, this was a real high spot of the performance and the atmosphere in the Hall was electric.

Reflections of Home is, in many ways, a literal title. It is impossible for me to compose, play, or hear this music without thinking of my youth, my childhood house, or my family’s piano. A departure from my usual 2-piano arrangements of classical repertoire, I felt that this irresistible song from 1929 just had to be arranged for ambitious solo pianists who have moments when they want to have some fun. After all, good music is good music, whatever mood you're in!I started my career playing simple versions of this kind of music by ear, and despite becoming dedicated to the classical musical world, I've never lost my admiration for the musicality and technical assuredness of many ragtime, honky-tonk and jazz pianists of 100 years ago. The best of their music is truly inspiring.The tempo I have chosen is livelier than 'Fats' Waller's own performance of the song, where he sings to his own piano accompaniment. It's more like the tempo of Louis Armstrong's inimitable version on trumpet.

I'd long wanted to compose an opera based on Arthur Miller's masterpiece based around the Salem witchcraft trials in the American colonies in 1692. Knowing that this was unlikely to come to fruition, nevertheless I sketched out some ideas just in case, which I turned into a 3 movement work for a local orchestra in 1999 for performance at their concert in September 2000. During January - March 2020 I revised the work for a larger orchestra adding 2 more movements (nos 3 & 4) and revising the existing movements. The opening movement is intended to be the Prelude to the opera. The 2nd movement the Prelude to the tense 3rd Act. The 3rd movement takes place at the climactic moment of Act 3, when John Proctor's valiant and desperate attempt to expose Abigail Williams' for what she is backfires, leading to his arrest. The 4th movement opens with the Hymn/Psalm associated with the people of Salem and continues with the reconciliation in prison between John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth.The 5th and final movement accompanies John Proctor's march to execution having nobly torn up his confession of witchcraft. The Hymn/Psalm returns before reminiscences of the opening Prelude return ending the work in a sense of uneasy peace.  Parts can be made available upon request.

That’s not a news headline (though it would be quite a good one) but the title of a book by composer Peter Warlock which I read avidly after first encountering the Italian composer in a lecture at the University of Liverpool in the 1980s. We were studying the Italian madrigal, which was not really my thing until our lecturer threw Moro Lasso into the mix. Its opening chords seemed so incongruous – unlike anything we had heard – and are as striking today as they must have been in 1611 when first published in Gesualdo’s 6th Book of Madrigals.More or less immediately after that lecture I arranged the piece for the Seras Brass Quintet which I had helped form. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited, and certainly didn’t include anything by Gesualdo!The arrangement really benefits from a church-like acoustic where you can make the most of the dramatic built-in silences. The tuba part lies quite high and is very playable on a trombone if need be. Even to modern ears there are some strange sounds and I trust that all the ‘wrong’ notes are Gesualdo’s rather than mine – do let me know if you think otherwise!

True Pluck A number of years ago, the great English guitarist Julian Bream told David Tanenbaum - the dedicatee of tonight's premiere - not to premiere a guitar work unless he knew for a fact it was the composer's second guitar work. Sage advice. The guitar is an instrument that gives up its secrets to a non-guitar playing composer only reluctantly. Indeed, the timbral, digital and chordal subtleties of this most subtle and intimate instrument are truly understood by the guitarist only. Pity the outlander who composes for the guitar for the first time! With this last thought in mind I had, until last fall, managed to avoid writing a guitar piece. However, even the most abject compositional coward will relent when a musician like David Tanenbaum asks for a piece and offers his assistance and critical judgement in its composition. So it was with PLUCK, composed between November of 1995 and January of 1996. Bream's advice notwithstanding, PLUCK is my first guitar piece. Tanenbaum is brave. The title, PLUCK, thus refers to both the action of plucking strings as well as pluck - bravery, grit, true grit. PLUCK is written in six interrelated movements. The first movement, Toccata/Hands of Steel introduces much of the essential pitch and harmonic material of the piece, as well as Flamenco-style rasgueado strumming which, try as I might, I could not resist using. Movement two, Strum/Serenade, explains itself in its title. Movement three, O Tanenbaum (a designation for which David has forgiven me) reprises the Toccata and describes, well, a sort of musical tree (David has forgiven me for this, too). Two-Part Contention is a combatative, argumentative movement that pits the treble strings of the guitar against the bass. Movement 5, John Doe is a lyric and mysterious moment of rest before the manic finale. Movement 6, True Pluck, is a fast, furious and virtuosic finale. PLUCK is dedicated, with greatest respect and affection, to my friend David Tanenbaum. May he only want to play my second guitar piece.
