Originally written by Paul when he was about 14 in 1956.   For the recording, the song was recorded in a key different from the final version; it was sped up at the request of McCartne to make his voice sound younger. As it is in the orignal version arranged by George Martin in wheich the Clarinet was a predominant intrumental voice, this chart features Clarinet on the main melody and written or improvised solo. In addition, it also features a written or improvised Trumpet solo with the Lead Trumpet range up to G above the treble staff. Written in the original Cut Time feel of 2 it is a swing chart aimed at an intermediate band level suitable for high school and collge bands and sure to be a crowd favourite.

Published by Ethan Gammage (A0.1030862). When I first began writing It’s Been so Long last year, I never knew how a song of this nature could inspire me to write. The lyrics were not what pushed me to arrange this; it was all of the feelings and rhythms that were occurring in the background. The song is originally a sad song about a mother and her son, but as I listened to the song, the words didn't release my emotions, it was the story being told in the background. My favorite part is what I gave the 2nd Alto Sax. Even though this was the last part I wrote, it is overall the most important in giving the audience the full story. It starts off insignificant only supporting the baseline and completing chords, but then it gains its own voice and becomes more independent as we reach the end.

While we were walking through the forests we came across a cave that burrowed into the rock of a cliff face. My grandfather called it a shoemaker's cave, but I didn't know why it was called that. All I remember is that my brother and I wanted to go in, but my grandmother wouldn't allow it. I've always wondered what might have been in there.

In 1988 my wife and I were sent by our church to take part in the World Conference on Liturgical Music in Rome at the Vatican.  It was so exciting for us to go on our first trip to the Eternal City!!  We took a taxi to the Vatican and it let us off right within walking distance of St. Peter's Basilica!  It was so overwhelming, exciting, and beautiful all at once; it was almost too much to take in!  After that wonderful week when I returned I set down and began to improvise at the piano to see what I might be able to express about the experience.  What came to me almost immediately was the memory of the sound of chant in that great space!  I came up with a very contemporary combination of old and new in a jazz framework.

I decided to arrange it for the unique sound of a bassoon quartet as I felt that sound world they create really suited it. A series of ostinati create excitement at the start of the piece. In the second section, chromatic lines create tension and drama before the opening section returns. When I had originally composed it I was stuck for a name, inspiration came from a pupil I was teaching at the time. Posy was struggling with a section of music, hence Posy's Predicament.
