Bugs Bower composed several volumes of Bop Duets.  Like so many other jazz musicians, my roommate and I spent countless hours playing through the volume we had, him on tenor sax and me on trumpet.  Playing them is a masterclass in jazz phrasing, and studying them is a masterclass in the classic principles of counterpoint.  It's a little bit like a Bach fugue.  You start with a short catchy theme, and then let it go where it wants to go, but always building on that theme.  I allowed myself a third voice here, which allow a little more richness.  See also my Sundry Quartet, which adds a fourth instrument to the same basic music.  Level: advanced intermediate.  Duration: 3 minutes, 12 seconds.

Starlit Waters, the 8th track from the debut album Reflections (2010). This is where it all began 'seriously' for me. Written in 1999, this piece won first prize in a composition competition and very much became the start of the journey of the whole album for the following 10 years! This was composed at a time in my life when I was using my pianistic skills to challenge my writing and vice versa. It was also at a time in my creative journey when I liked to cram as many different ideas into a piece of music as I possible could, something which I've been criticised for for my entire professional life (tough cookies I say!). It's definitely no coincidence that my interest in creating 'surprise' with sudden changes in music coincided with having Bohemian Rhapsody on constant repeat when was a kid!

Originally sung by Russian pop star Polina Gagarina, it would suit a large group or even a massed chorus, and involves a 'stomp stomp clap' moment similar to that in Queen's 'We Will Rock You'. This arrangement could come at a dramatic moment in a show, or close a high school concert. It starts with an alto solo, which could be sung by a whole section, and builds to a vocally intense climax.

Every section of the ensemble states the theme at some point in the movement.This movement is based on the ballad of the same name,in which a lady, who while living with her uncle in a village is kidnapped by three Roma. After being missing for a long time, the villagers begin to speculate that the uncle is responsible for her disappearance, later imprisoning him and condemning him to death. At some point, the lady was found in Dublin by a young squire who loved her and was subsequently brought back to the village. Upon return to the village, the villagers, mere moments away from executing the uncle at the gallows, realized their error and set the uncle free, celebrating the lady's return with church bells (which are emulated by the tubular bells in the closing of the movement), music, and frivolity.As this movement was not yet completed at the time of the work's premiere, it was omitted for the performance.For Info:Green Bushes is an English folk song  which is featured in the second movement of Vaughan Williams's English Folk Song Suite, in Percy Grainger's Green Bushes (Passacaglia on an English Folksong), and in George Butterworth's The Banks of Green Willow. He wrote his setting of Gretchen am Spinnrade (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), derived from Goethe's Faust, when he was 17 years old. Originally for voice and piano, Gretchen provides a first-person account of the feelings of its titular character as she works at her spinning wheel while reflecting on her conflicted emotions regarding Faust. The constant motion in the accompaniment part, echoing the tireless spinning of the wheel and the regular fall of her foot on the pedal, churns over a swiftly changing series of harmonies, representing both how swept away she is by her feelings for Faust but also her pain of not being able to be with him. The wheel's only pause comes when Gretchen reflects on Faust's kiss; it is the only moment in the song where she completely forgets her task at hand, so wrapped up is she in her tumultuous thoughts. As the musical patterns of the spinning wheel slowly but insistently return, Gretchen's composure is regained, and she returns to her task.
