The psaltery part was designed for a beginning psaltery player. The piano accompaniment is at the intermediate level. The psaltery plays the melody for the first verse of each song with an optional repeat included in case a longer song is desired. For each song in this book, piano accompaniment tracks (MP3 format) are available as a separate purchase. To assist those new to reading music notation, two solo parts are included: one is the standard music notation and includes the lyrics for sing along enjoyment. The second solo part is identical to the standard music but instead of lyrics, the note names are provided below each note (example A, B, C. . .). The range of a typical soprano psaltery is two octaves beginning with the G above middle C (G4). However, since some soprano psalteries have fewer than 25 strings, the range used in this book is less than 2 octaves. Also, the notes are written an octave lower on the staff to avoid the ledger line notes that would be required to notate the upper notes. Thus, the notated range in this book is from A3 (A below middle C) to D5 (the second D above middle C).For each song, there is a combined score (grand staff, 3-stave) with both parts (PSALTERY and PIANO) on each page, plus 2 options for the 1-staff solo part (one with lyrics, one with alphabetic note names). This score is for two Readers, handbells (3 octaves) and organ.A medieval folk belief of old Europe was that of all the animals miraculously starting to speak at the birth of the Christ Child. In about 1630, William Austin, a poet and lawyer in London, drew on this traditional belief to write one of his Carrols, for Christmas-day, in which he imagined what the most Stentorian animal of all, the rooster, might say about the new-born Holy Infant in Bethlehem. In setting William Austin’s carrol to music, James Siddons has given the organ the role of creating a soundscape to underpin the drama of Chanticleer’s proclamation. Following each of Austin’s three stanzas (in dramatic recitation by the Readers), an adaptation of the old French tune O Come, Emmanuel is played by handbells in a harmonic style that recalls the pealing of church bells on Christmas morning. This work is appropriate for the beginning of Advent and Christmas day worship, and in a service or program of Christmas music; for example, a service of lessons and carols. The purchase price includes permission to make 14 copies of the score (2 Readers, 8-10 handbell players, organist, and conductor) and permission to video-record a performance for posting on school or church websites and in streaming broadcast.

'S Toigh Leam Fhìn Buntàta: this is a traditional Strathspey folk tune from Scotland, transcribed and arranged for two melody instruments, and is one of a number of folk tune arrangements by the UK based folk duo Na-Mara. In the key of D, 'S Toigh Leam Fhìn Buntàta can be played as a duet on two mandolins or on any C clef instruments (violins, ukuleles, flutes etc), with the guitar chords accompanying the individual players. We came across this tune from an album by the Scots-Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis, and the song she sings is all about liking butter and potatoes. Performance tips: this is beginner / intermediate level piece played Allegro or at a moderate fast speed. We have added a second melody part to the original tune, and this makes a nice interplay between the melody instruments. Make sure the rhythm of the characteristic ‘Scotch snap’ is crisp and clean. The guitar accompaniment can be played with broken chords, or arpeggio style. This tune works well included as part of a ‘Ceilidh’ set.Na-Mara (Rob Garcia and Paul McNamara) perform this instrumental piece on mandolin or octave mandola, with guitar accompaniment. They have also used it alongside other tunes in workshops as a teaching and learning resource, introducing players to tunes from different parts of the Celtic world.
