November 1969 by the Cuban National Orchestra under my direction. This symphony reflects not only the excited atmosphere of awakening during those years but also my efforts to include in the composition the large number of new human and artistic stimuli that I experienced at that time. So the banjo starts to play a Vietnamese song of freedom (Stars in the Night), later the first bars of Mikis Theodorakis hymn of freedom is heard. The second movement is based on the poem Fe de erratas (errata sheet) by Miguel Barnet. In the original version, the three parts of the symphony merge without interruption. In the revised version, I separated them to make it easier for the audience to register the caesuras which are also internal caesuras as regards content. Apart from strengthening the string sound, the most significant alternation in comparison to the first version is that I fully composed all of the aleatoric passages and pitches which originally were to be freely improvised as was the fashion at that time. He had done some drinking, he had smoked like a chimney for many years. As a result of some bad choices, he had to undergo quadruple bypass heart surgery, from which he never really came back fully. I remember my last visit was on the porch swing at dad and mom's  place. He was really down on himself, very dissatisfied with his life, and basically considered himself a failure. I tried to assure him that I was proud of him. After all, he stayed with mom, ran a small business, left a paid off house, always kept us fed, and even took us on some wild journeys across the country. I thought about dad after he passed and the thought came to me that even though he was down on himself, in my eyes he was a king. The rest is history. .

I often arranged parts with individuals in mind. The piano part is there for support and filling in. Not a difficult piece and very repetitive and catchy. I have arranged this piece for a school orchestra made up of pupils of grades 1-3. I suggest a solo for the first 4 bars (I did with a recorder). At F there is a ‘jazz’ style solo. Choose your instrument. Once I did with a recorder. A second time with a trumpet. Beware you won’t get the tune out of your head!!

It has been recorded through the years by artists like Boxcar Willie, the Carter Family, Bill Monroe, the Chuck Wagon Gang, The Oak Ridge Boys, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, and Brad Paisley. Tillman's tune here is in 3/4 time, but a 4/4 version became popular when Patsy Cline recorded it in 1959. Willie Nelson later dubbed his voice into that version as a duet. In 2010, Western Writers of America chose this hymn as one of the Top 100 Western Songs of all time. This arrangement by McIntire is an Intermediate Piano Solo in the key of G featured in the Gospel Piano Classics series.
