Instrumentation: 3333-4331-timp-2perc-cel-hp-strings Program Notes: When Charles Ansbacher, music director of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, commissioned me to write Pluto as a grand finale for The Planets by Gustav Holst, I immediately thought of Pluto, the Disney character; but common sense took over when I sat down to work. So instead of Disney’s faithful dog, I gravitated to the Pluto of Roman mythology. After a long battle with the Titans, the three brothers, Zeus, Poseidon and Pluto, divided the world among themselves. Zeus had the sky; Poseidon, the sea; and Pluto, the Underworld. According to mythology, the spirits of the dead, whether good or bad, enter the Underworld. Cerberus, a vicious three-headed beast, stands guard at the entrance - preventing the living from entering the world of the dead. The movement begins with a fanfare: Cerberus at the gates of the Underworld. Then a grand waltz materializes in the bass: Pluto dances!! As the waltz fades away, a lyrical tune emerges: Persephone, the wife of Pluto, appears. The work ends with a reprise of the opening fanfare, slightly altered.

Theme from Harry's Game is a 1982 song by Clannad commissioned as the theme for 'Harry's Game', a Yorkshire Television miniseries adapted from a 1975 novel set in The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It was released as a single in October 1982 and became a surprise hit, reaching number 5 in the UK Singles Chart the following month and number 2 in the Irish Singles Chart. The song is to date the only British hit single ever to have been sung entirely in Irish. The chorus Fol lol the doh fol the day, Fol the doh fol the day, is ancient Irish mouth-music, known as Portaireacht, which is common in traditional music. The song won an Ivor Novello award, and launched Clannad's global career. It has since appeared in several Hollywood movies, most notably 'Patriot Games', in which an IRA member, played by Patrick Bergin, is seen watching the music video for the song on his television. Available for concert bands worldwide for the first time, this haunting piece would provide a contrasting interlude in a programme of film and television music and features passages for cor anglais, which are cued for smaller ensembles.

He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer.   One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as a Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. His career in higher education has included both faculty and arts administration appointments.
