Brahms alludes to his admired predecessor Schubert in No. 13 with a quote from the song Der Leiermann from Die Winterreise. Ralph Sauer has lovingly arranged these for six-part Trombone Ensemble of moderate difficulty, able to be performed by just about any level group with the all parts in bass clef and in easy ranges. They can all be performed without the need of a bass trombone or f-attachment.

The Music Composed in 1985 which beyond its inspiration from the painting was clearly influenced by Debussy's La cathédrale engloutie. The recording is from 1987 with the composer performing at a small college in New Hampshire.
