Soprano voice,Vocal Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.873044 Composed by Sally Whitwell. Contemporary. 12 pages. Sally Whitwell #6130719. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.873044). If you really pushed me to make a call, Mussorsgky’s Pictures at an Exhibition would be one of my favourite pieces in the classical repertoire. Somewhat outrageously, for a pianist, I prefer the colours and textures of the orchestrated version. I reasonably regularly listen to it, especially in transit. But to be honest, it’s not the kind of music that I perform all that often i.e. music by dead, white, male composers. I mean, it’s 2020 and as the meme says I can’t believe I still have to protest this sh*t. And I feel it too for those in the visual art world. I mean, things are a good deal better over there in contemporary art world, where women are exhibited regularly and everyone seems to embrace it without a fuss. As for women artists from centuries gone by, it’s less good news but they’re working on it. I’m reminded of the situation daily as my older brother, who is excellent at choosing gifts thoughtfully, gave me some Guerrilla Girls merchandise which I use as an iPad cover. Entitled Advantages of Being a Woman Artist, it’s a list of truths that’s pretty relatable for any creative woman. My favourite bit - Being reassured that whatever kind of art you make it will be labeled feminine. Ooft. Too real. And so I conceived of this song cycle as a kind of gift for those fighting the traditional, patriarchal structures of the entire creative sector. Three songs, inspired by three works by three wonderful Australian women artists of last century. All are depictions of scenes around Sydney Harbour. In-curve is inspired by Grace Cossington Smith’s The Bridge in-curve, a depiction of an unfinished Sydney Harbour Bridge, painted in 1930 The Code is inspired by Thea Proctor’s woodcut print Women with fans. It is thought to be a portrait of two other artists, printmakers Ethel Spowers and Eveline Syme, sitting above Rushcutters Bay. Where would we sail? is inspired by a very different view of the same location Still life and Rushcutters Bay by Margaret Olley.

She breaks away from her expected role as a sheep in an obedient flock and becomes a wolf sharpening her teeth and honing her skills. Moreover, she calls for others to follow her to stand up and face the enemy. More than a century later, Storni’s voice still echoes with a powerful call to action in a world where women’s rights are as fragile as ever. Bored of its usual role as a bird, the flute breaks away from the flock to inhabitat the wolf through transformative electronic distortions. The main theme mimics actual wolf calls, surprisingly comfortable in the flute’s low register. The tango-infused choral harmonies evoke the dissonance and angst in women’s struggle for equality through the ages.

Choral Choir (SSA) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.891202 Composed by Laurie Betts Hughes. Contemporary. Octavo. 11 pages. Dandelion Music Press #3104027. Published by Dandelion Music Press (A0.891202). If you are looking to highlight your women's group and feature soloists from within the ensemble, this women's-choir-friendly piece is a harmonically interesting and pianistically supported way to explore those textures. The composer writes: I often find it difficult to find music for grown women: much treble repertoire is written for children's ranges and feature children's themes, and the remainder seems to be about romantic relationships.  When searching for a text that speaks to the nature of a woman, I found Emily Dickinson's little-known For largest Woman's Heart I knew.  It seemed to pair naturally with Heart! We will forget him! and provide context rooted in personal strength. While Dickinson was a prolific private poet, fewer than a dozen of her nearly 1,800 poems were published during her lifetime, usually altered significantly to fit the conventional poetic rules of the time.  A complete, and mostly unaltered, scholarly collection of her poetry first became available five full years after Aaron Copland's musical settings of her poetry.  Laurie Betts Hughes explores what Copland never had the chance to: Emily Dickinson's poem as the poet had conceived it, unedited, and with the punctuation she intended.2017 Choral Contest EntryLaurie Betts Hughes, ASCAP | www.LaurieBettsHughes.com

Piano,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1444309 Composed by J. Francis Ball, Mercedes M Yardley. Arranged by J.Francis Ball. Classical,Contemporary. 30 pages. J.Francis Ball #1024223. Published by J.Francis Ball (A0.1444309). Program Notes   Mercedes M. Yardley      is a dark fantasist who wears poisonous flowers in her hair. She is a two-time Bram Stoker Award winner for Little Dead Red and “Fracture.” She is the author of Darling, the Stabby Award-winning Apocalyptic Montessa and Nuclear Lulu: A Tale of Atomic Love, Pretty Little Dead Girls, and Love is a Crematorium. Mercedes lives in Las Vegas and can be found at mercedesmyardley.com.   J. Francis Ball Is a composer, violinist, and guitarist who has performed in multiple bands, in collaborations, in orchestras, and solo projects. He has recorded and released ten studio albums with The Unwieldies and The Psyatics. His classical, jazz, romantic, and punk musical influences can be heard in all his contemporary compositions. J. Francis Ball was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and currently lives and performs in Las Vegas.    His Words This collaboration began with a powerful name. I asked Mercedes to listen to and name an early piano composition I wrote. Her reply was “Beyond Her Only Dreaming.” The original composition was ultimately scrapped, but the name stuck with me. It inspired the muses whispering in my haunted ear. I wrote five musical tone poems that were loosely based on a woman’s dream. During the creative process, I asked Mercedes to listen to the tones and use her imagination to create sketches for each section. Her spoken poetry powerfully frames a woman’s dreams, fears, desires, and hope for love. They blend seamlessly with the music and are so masterfully written that they create a picture frame to use as structure but leave the canvas blank. This allows the listener to also take part in this collaboration and paint their own visions of how they experience the music. J.F.B.Her Words   I’m a dreamer and writer of words, but I love music. When John asked me to name his original musical piece, I was delighted. I had recently written a story based on Robert Chamber’s famed The King in Yellow collection and, due to the sound and feel of John’s piece, loosely named the composition after my short story. John took this title and created a brilliant new musical composition. After listening to it, I was influenced to create spoken- word pieces that match the emotion of the music while also hearkening back to the original short story.   The piece you’ll hear contains poetry influenced by original music inspired by a short story based on a collection written in 1895. Time is a flat circle. This is how art moves and breathes, and I’m truly honored to take part. MMY.

Piano Solo - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1487360 By Aretha Franklin. By Otis Redding. Arranged by Sucipta. 20th Century,Pop,R & B,Rock,Soul. Score. 7 pages. Karya Sucipta #1064338. Published by Karya Sucipta (A0.1487360). The way Franklin spelled out R-E-S-P-E-C-T ensured the message was loud and clear. She flipped the song from a plea from a man to the woman he loves to a woman’s demand for respect. In Redding’s version there was no spelling of “R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” and no backup singers. In its original form, the song also played out as a more male-dominated relationship (i.e. show respect to your man), until Franklin called for “respect” towards women. The song became a running anthem for the feminist and civil rights movements throughout the 1970s (source: americansongwriter.com).Let's play the piano solo of this song with enthusiasm. Thank You.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.799983 Composed by Emmylou Harris. Arranged by David Walker. Contemporary. Octavo. 7 pages. Walker Press #6329171. Published by Walker Press (A0.799983). This is a simple arrangement of the evocative and affirming Precious Memories.  Whether to honor seniors or as a memorial, few songs extend a sense of thanks and gratitude as this. The first verse is a woman's solo; she's joined by a second woman for the verse.  The chorus then takes over.I've attributed Emmylou Harris' copyright to this because of the extended measures in the final section.  She's not the only person to use a 4/4 2/4, but thanks to her (and it's a good thanks), I can no longer think of the chorus in strict 4/4.

Cello Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1029293 Composed by CÉSAR CANO. Contemporary,World. Individual part. 16 pages. POLYHYMNIA Ediciones musicales #4799037. Published by POLYHYMNIA Ediciones musicales (A0.1029293). Perfil del ánima (Profile of the anima), Op. 86 is a solo cello piece written in a single movement. It is part of the series of PROFILES that I am composing since 2002 for solo instruments. The anima is a concept expounded by C.G. Jung in his book The Man and his Symbols. It is a personification of all female psychological tendencies in the psyche of a man, such as vague feelings and moods, prophetic forebodings, receptivity to the irrational, personal capacity for love, love of nature and, very importantly, his relationship with the unconscious. It is best perceived in dreams. If the dreamer is a man, he will discover a female personification of his unconscious. If it is a woman, it will be a male figure. Jung named them respectively anima and animus. My work has some quotes that evoke the anima, as a fragment of the 2nd movement of Mahler's 5th Symphony, which he wrote under the fascination of Alma Schindler, his future wife. Another citation is a motif of Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, an elf from Slavic mythology, which usually lives in a lake or river. Rusalka is an ancient fairy-tale figure, already appearing in literature in 1387. Her longing is to become a human being and to love as an earthly woman, even at the price of suffering and death. My piece evokes this inner and unconscious dialogue between the masculine and feminine in all of us, represented by the cello’s low and high registers. The use of many and varied instrumental resources (chords, microtones, harmonics, timbral variations, complex rhythms, tremolos, glissandi, pizzicati, etc.), together with its broadness and thematic complexity, make Profile of the anima a demanding work for the soloist. I finished its composition on December 21th, 2016. It is dedicated to Rafał Jezierski, who performed its world premiere on February 14th, 2017, in the Auditorium of the Museum of Fine Arts of Valencia, within the cycle of concerts organized by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos.

Guitar,Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1300258 By Barry Manilow. By Barry Manilow and Martin Panzer. Arranged by Unimusic Academy. Contemporary,Pop,Rock,Singer/Songwriter. Score. 3 pages. Unimusic Academy (Academia Unimusica) #890000. Published by Unimusic Academy (Academia Unimusica) (A0.1300258). Even Now is a 1978 song by American adult contemporary and pop music singer Barry Manilow. It is the title track from his 1978 album, and Manilow wrote the music and co-produced the track with Ron Dante. The words were written by Marty Panzer.Released as the second single from the album, Even Now became a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in June 1978, peaking at No. 19.[1] It became Manilow's ninth song to reach number one on the Billboard easy listening chart, spending three weeks atop the chart beginning May 27, 1978.[2]Billboard described Even Now as one of Manilow's classiest efforts.[3] Cash Box said that Barry reaches shivering moments.[4] Record World called it an emotional, sen-timental ballad in [Manilow's] trademark style.[5]In his autobiography Sweet Life, Manilow said that the song was one of my personal favorites, which never fails to move me. It reminded me of the great times I had collaborating with Marty Panzer, with whom the singer had worked previously. The lyrics of this song describe the remorse and regret felt by the lyricist over leaving a woman with whom he had a great relationship with for a much better life with a different woman, even though his instincts told him that it wasn't the right move to make. Choral Choir,Choral (SSAA) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1286803 Composed by Colin Eatock. 21st Century,A Cappella,Medieval,Sacred. 18 pages. Colin Eatock Music #877827. Published by Colin Eatock Music (A0.1286803). A cappella SSSAAA sextet; ca. 3 min.The composer writes: Hildegard von Bingen (1098 – 1179) was a woman of many talents: she was an abbess, a philosopher, a scientist, a poet and a composer. An extensive body of her sacred songs was collected in a cycle called the Symphonia armoniae celestium revelationum (The Harmonic Music of Celestial Mysteries). The collection also contains several texts for which Hildegard’s music has been lost, and “O Magna Res†is one of these. “O Magna Res†could be described as a miniature chronology of the Christian spiritual world. It begins with God alone, proceeding to His creation of life, and then to the fall of humanity. As in many of Hildegard’s texts, “O Magna Res†contrasts the Virgin Mary with Eve. Finally, with the birth of Christ (for which the “dawn†is a poetic metaphor) comes the redemption of Woman, and her beneficent influence on the world.

Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.911345 By Keith Terrett. By Various. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Jazz,Spiritual,Traditional. 43 pages. Keith Terrett #517391. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.911345). Four Early Jazz Classics from the USA for Brass Quintet includes: 1)Little Brown Jug:It was originally a drinking song. It remained well known as a folk song into the early 20th century. Like many songs which make reference to alcohol, it enjoyed new popularity during the Prohibition era. In 1939, bandleader Glenn Miller recorded and broadcast his swing instrumental arrangement of the tune with great success, and the number became one of the best known orchestrations of the American Big Band era. 2)Frankie & Johnny:Frankie and Johnny (sometimes spelled Frankie and Johnnie; also known as Frankie and Albert or just Frankie) is a traditional American popular song. It tells the story of a woman, Frankie, who finds that her man Johnny was making love to another woman and shoots him dead. Frankie is then arrested; in some versions of the song she is also executed. 3)Tin Roof Blues:Tin Roof Blues is a jazz composition by the New Orleans Rhythm Kings first recorded in 1923. It was written by band members Paul Mares, Ben Pollack, Mel Stitzel, George Brunies and Leon Roppolo. The tune has become a jazz standard and is one of the most recorded and often played New Orleans jazz compositions. 4)Battle Hymn of the Republic:The Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory outside of the United States, is a song by American writer Julia Ward Howe using the music from the song John Brown’s Body. Howe’s more famous lyrics were written in November 1861, and first published in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of time (Old Testament, Isaiah 63; New Testament, Rev. 19) with the American Civil War. Since that time, it has become an extremely popular and well-known American patriotic song. Arranged here for Brass Quintet, this arrangement is available for most ensembles of your choice, e-mail for other arrangements. An excellent selection for your next concert!
