I Will Give Thanks to the Lord was composed in 1998 and is intended as a more contemporary option to the sung liturgy associated with the mainstream Christian church, while still maintaining the integrity of traditional liturgical elements. This setting is scored for handbells, two C instruments which double the voices, piano (or electronic keyboard), and bass guitar. The music may be performed with one or more instruments missing as frequently happens for church services. The file contains full score, instrumental parts, and a vocal only which may duplicated for congregational use. The complete setting is also available in a simplified version for piano only. Much of the liturgy is in the form of Call and Response, that is, a music leader sings a phrase and the congregation responds, often repeating the initial phrase exactly. There are two versions for the Nunc Dimittis, the congregational response following Holy Communion. The first is a paraphrase of Simeon’s exclamation at seeing the child Jesus.
