The William Wallace Gilchrist Piano Trio in G Minor is a monumental, and historically significant work.

In 1990, while chairman of the music department of Paine College, I spent a week doing research on a project in the Philadelphia Free Library.  

In the course of that project, I stumbled upon an unpublished major chamber piece by one of America’s first homegrown Romantic composers, William Wallace Gilchrist (1846-1916).  The find was a vellum (ink on onion skin) working score and parts - working score in that there were changes made on the pages (assumed to be in the composer’s own handwriting) of Gilchrist’s first piano trio.

I had other projects at hand, so it was 2005 before I finished editing and annotating the score and parts, presented here.  I encourage the reader to refer to the editorial notes in preparing this piece for performance.

You Are The Sunshine Of My Life was released as a single in March 1973 and was Stevie Wonder's third number-one on the Billboard 100 charts. It appears on the Talking Book album along with Superstition. It was nominated for both Grammy Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and ultimately won the Grammy award for best male vocal, although there are other vocalists on the start of the track. The harmonies are both lush and jazzy and the melody line jumps around in the second section. Throughout the performance the rhythms need to be tight and precise, yet also with a laid back quality to the syncopations - don't rush! This arrangement is mostly in 3 parts apart from the coda, where the men can split into tenor and bass parts, and the piano accompaniment can be altered to suit, though an electric piano tone like the recording would work well. The arrangement would suit an intermediate mixed adult or school choir, and there is a vocal score included to help reduce the number of pages for the choir.

The phrase Mané, Thécel, Pharès is a transliteration of Aramaic words found in the biblical Book of Daniel, specifically Daniel 5:25. The English translation of these words is:

Mané (or Mene): Numbered
Thécel (or Tekel): Weighed
Pharès (or Parsin/ Peres): Divided
In context, the full interpretation given in the Bible is:

Mané: God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end.
Thécel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting.
Pharès: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.
These words were famously written on the wall during King Belshazzar's feast, foretelling the fall of his kingdom.

This little choral prayer has a text from St. Anselm of Canterbury (ca. 1330), slightly revised by me to make it more inclusive. “Illuminate and inspire, we beseech thee, all thinkers, writers, artists and crafters.� And I love that it allows us “to rejoice in beauty.� I found this text on the wall of a side chapel in Canterbury Cathedral in 1983 and set it originally in 1984 as a memorial to one of my uncles, my father’s brother, who was a skilled landscape artist. I later revised it as one of the movements of my Requiem, composed in 1994 (revised ’95).

This song has 14 chapters representing 12 waltzes mixed. The music sheet has 213 pages and can be electronically converted to a soundtrack playing for about 21 minutes. Some songs (chapters) were composed of ancient Chinese poems by famous poets like Liu Bang, Bai Juyi, Tao Yuan-ming, Su Dong-po, et al. A video with the same title has been posted on YouTube.com, which contains more than 130 images of photos and a few short videos with the background melody of this song. Although most of the songs were published before as early as 2008 and later, the author re-composed carefully based on his memory with certain modifications and key signature changes to adjust an even playing of the song in one whole piece. The highlights of the stories' songs are as follows: The beginning part of the song is originally called the prelude of Tao Yuan-ming's The Eutopia of the Peach Land Spring; which is followed by the historical long poem of 616 Chinese characters called Pi Pa Xing by Bai Ji-yi around 1:30. Around 8:06 is a small bird feeding her young chicken and its tail-dancing matches with the melody of the song which was modified from Beijing Opera by the composer. Around 11:30  is the song called Wedding Waltz for Su Dong-po's poem Written on the West Wood Wall; around 13:40 is the Chi Le Song; around 14:00 to 15:00 is the song -  Love Forever, which was jointly created with his son Raymond and his wife Catherine 25 years ago. The playing time at 15:30 is the song the author wrote for his poem called Life and Sea in 100 Chinese Characters; around 18:00 to 19:00 is King's Wedding by the author. Two songs around 11:00 are Raise the Championship Cup and 19:30 Bon Voyage which the composer wrote for the 2008 Bejing Olympic Games.

When we were building our home, my husband had a big goal of not making it possible for birds to nest on the house or over the porches. (Our rental home had barn swallow nests at both the front and back doors, and it was just too messy.)

But the second spring after we moved in, some Say’s phoebes showed up and wanted to nest on the house; and my husband totally fell in love with them and built them a special platform — the phoebe condo. We had 5 fledglings that year! The next spring the phoebes returned! More nests, more fledglings, more joy.

When I wanted music that was lively in a gentle way, and just completely happy, I naturally thought of the phoebes. Listen for the phoebe call in the middle section.

This is a my piano version of 'A Kiss to Build a Dream On'
It is mostly in the key of C major but modulates briefly to Eb for the ending. I have arranged it in a stride piano style. This style of music has evolved from the ragtime of Scott Joplin through the early jazz piano players like Fats Waller and James P Johnson. The left hand can be tricky but it can be simplified by replacing the tenths with single bass notes.
It's both a cheerful and sentimental tune. I have included chord symbols which I find as useful as the notation when learning a piece. I haven't included pedal symbols, dynamics or fingering - leaving this as a choice for the player and no two pianist ever see eye to eye on these issues in any event!
Please note this is a piano solo only and other instruments included in my YouTube video are not notated.

It's a Sin to Tell a Lie is a 1936 popular song written by Billy Mayhew, introduced early that year on records by many dance bands including Dick Robertson on the 78rpm record Champion 40106, and later popularized by Fats Waller on Victor Records.  It was recorded in French by Cajun singer Cléoma Breaux in 1936 or 1937. Four further recordings of the song were made in 1936, namely by Freddy Ellis and His Orchestra (April), Victor Young and His Orchestra (April), Elton Britt (September), Roy Smeck and His Serenaders and Vera Lynn. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills that we hope you like!
