Thanks, John.  The song spent six weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in the spring of 1969 and was eventually certified platinum in the US by the RIAA.  Instrumental backing was written by Bill Holman and provided by session musicians commonly known as the Wrecking Crew.  As Holman tells it, the recording can be traced to an incident in which 5th Dimension lead singer Billy Davis Jr. left his wallet in a New York City cab; the man who found the wallet was involved in the production of Hair and invited the group to see the show:  After they'd seen it I received a phone call in which they were all talking over one another, saying 'We've got to cut this song Aquarius.  It's the best thing ever.'.

Intervallic Structure (Andante con moto) II. Tone and Color (Meno mosso) III. Urban Rhythm (Allegro ma non troppo) Based upon a strict and unvarying formula of patterns that are passed equally between the three violin parts, all three movements utilize this same precise structure of A, B, C, and Ostinato phrases. Each movement, however, while based upon the same formulaic set of patterns, vary by the material of the four phrases themselves; the phrases’ material is each based upon very different scales, depending on the particular movement’s character. Counterpoint Invariable is a successful thought-experiment, turned to driving and evocative emotional artwork, highlighting Wallin Huff's ongoing fascination with the logic of mechanical structure giving way to outward beauty. It is a true, fulfilling reward to perform and explore this work in its entirety.

William Billings, the first native-born American composer, wrote Chester as a patriotic tune embracing the American disdain for their British overlords and espousing the need for freedom and self-determination. The title, merely reflects a common practice of the time of having hymn tunes named for the location of their composition, rather than for their content.  The piece served as a sort of de facto national anthem in the early years of our nationhood. Set one note higher than the original it uses the entire range of the guitar from a tuned down bottom D up to the F# on fret 14 to make a wall of sound.It runs for nearly 5 minutes, and like so many good modern tunes there are countermelodies, subtle variations on repeats and a really satisfying sound.My arrangement for 3 guitars would sound even more impressive in a large ensemble setting.There are no fingerings - the most important thing about this piece is to find a position that works for the players.This is a large piece - the music takes up 4 sheets of paper per player...I hope you enjoy this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts.
