My double-strung harp arrangement in the dorian mode has rolled, echoed chords, highlighting the depth of sound we can get from having two sets of strings. The accompaniment hand traverses the entire range of the harp, often overlapping the melody hand.Range and key: D dorian (all naturals). 24x2 strings. C below middle C through E.Lever changes: None.Good for: Performance, memorials, therapeutic settings.Double-strung effects: The LH accompaniment frequently overlaps the RH melody range. Rolled accompaniment chords often contain the same note as the melody, creating a rolled echo. Some chords that aren’t rolled have doubled notes in both hands, creating depth. The repetition of LH patterns makes this a great piece to learn overlapping hands with.Characteristics: Neither hand needs to place more than an octave spread. There are some four-note chords (always LH 1-3-5-8). The RH has almost no chords. Few of the chords are inversions. There are very few sixteenth notes; no more than three played together with one hand. The LH has two long-run patterns (1-5-8-9-10 and 1-5-8-9) which can be played with cross-unders or a wandering thumb. The RH has a few cross-overs/unders.Finger placement: Finger number suggestions are provided for key phrases. Numbers above the notes are suggestions for the RH (marked with R or R# when they occur in the bottom staff). This is a beautiful rendition of the familiar chant, keeping the intent of early chant and choral sound, but within a more contemporary harmonic palette.  It begins simply and ends in a very uplifting, positive manner, with several transpositions along the way.  However, the feeling of plainchant is always present in each variation as they evolve.  This is the first of what I hope to be a collection of hymn arrangements for choir that follow the Christian Church Year, this one being Advent season.  Of course it can be sung anytime that fits the situation, but I used the United Methodist Hymnal suggestion for an Advent hymn.  The piano simulates bells and chimes, and the voices sometimes do also.  A very uplifting arrangement, while not so difficult as to discourage choirs.  It employs the concept of canon and contemporary harmonies.  I hope you and your choir or choral organization enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

I think it’s a very effective work, but sadly the Musical Director of the choir for whom it was written thought ‘the parts were too high’ and it was never performed. She may have been right about the alto part, but it was the way she said it after I presented her with 40 copies for her choir. Guess what? I didn’t write another thing for them, and no, I’m not telling you which choir it was, but they are from Exmouth in Devon and they were formed in 1997.

The mezzo-soprano part was assigned the descant due to where my computer placed the parts, and I have a note about that, so I understand that is not correct and I apologize if you're picky about that like me. Anyway, I think it sounds really catchy. It's arranged in the key of F major, which is slightly higher to better fit the alto line. If you would like, you could use the alto line as a solo part and give the altos the bottom note of the soprano note. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this arrangement. It was really fun to arrange, and I imagine it is really fun to perform. :).

Child’s Play is a representative work that captures the moods and sensations of a child’s backyard adventures through the perspective of their mind’s eye. As a young boy, I revelled in creating grand stories and playing them out in my backyard. I felt so invested in them that they almost seemed real and I endeavour to capture this commitment to my imagination in Child’s Play. The simple semiquaver ostinato present throughout most of the work represents the innocence of being young. It’s lilting nature lead’s the listener to reminisce on the carefree nature of life at that age. In contrast to this, the stirring harmonies evoke feelings of drama and grandeur that depict the sagas that my imagination conjured. In keeping with the representative nature of the work, the sporadic changes in dynamics symbolize being constantly swept away to different imaginary lands as we all know young boys can rarely stay focused on a single idea for very long. With reference to the pedalling, I have very deliberately written the change to occur between notes where specified. This creates a lucid harmonic rhythm throughout the entire piece and a constant undertone of the mysterious enigma that is a child’s mind.

Your audiences will love the melody and harmonies. This arrangement by Donald A. Mills is for barbershop as a quartet or chorus. It is TTBB (TLBB) a cappella, sung softly, sweetly, legato, singing the four dotted quarter notes as a 3/4 time. The Beach Boys have mentioned that they wrote In My Room in 12/8 time because they had tired of the 3/4 time many songs of the day were written in. From Wikipedia, Gary Usher explained that 'In My Room found us taking our craft a little more seriously. Brian and I came back to the house one night after playing 'over-the-line' (a baseball game). I played bass and Brian was on organ. The song was written in an hour... Brian's melody all the way. The sensitivity... the concept meant a lot to him. When we finished, it was late, after our midnight curfew. In fact, Murry [the Wilson brothers' father] came in a couple of times and wanted me to leave. Anyway, we got Audree [the Wilson brothers' mother], who was putting her hair up before bed, and we played it for her. She said, 'That's the most beautiful song you've ever written.' Murry said, 'Not bad, Usher, not bad,' which was the nicest thing he ever said to me. Gary Usher (who co-wrote the lyrics with Brian Wilson) further describes that Brian was always saying that his room was his whole world. Brian seconds this opinion: I had a room, and I thought of it as my kingdom. And I wrote that song, very definitely, that you're not afraid when you're in your room. It's absolutely true. In 1990, Brian wrote, I also enjoyed producing 'In My Room'. There is a story behind this song. When Dennis, Carl and I lived in Hawthorne as kids, we all slept in the same room. One night I sang the song 'Ivory Tower' to them and they liked it. Then a couple of weeks later, I proceeded to teach them both how to sing the harmony parts to it. It took them a little while, but they finally learned it. We then sang this song night after night. It brought peace to us. When we recorded 'In My Room', there was just Dennis, Carl and me on the first verse...and we sounded just like we did in our bedroom all those nights. This story has more meaning than ever since Dennis' death.
