String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1401941 Composed by Alexander Scriabin. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 20th Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Historic,Standards. 36 pages. Jmsgu3 #985140. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1401941). Scriabin's Op. 74, specifically the Five Preludes, is significant for its innovative harmonic system based on the Mystic Chord. Scriabin's use of the acoustic scale as a set, known as the Mystic Chord, revolutionized traditional tonal gravity and functionality in his compositions. The tritone plays a crucial role in his harmonic construction and formal definition, often leading to sections returning at tritone transpositions. Despite the absence of tonal gravity, Scriabin assigns a pitch-center to his pieces, redefining tonal orientation through the primary transposition of the Mystic Chord. These preludes, composed in 1914 before he died in 1915, showcase Scriabin's mastery of harmonies and his departure from traditional tonalities.

Jmsgu3 #888225. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1298252). Giles Farnaby was an English composer and virginalist during the late 16th and early 17th centuries. He is known for his contributions to Elizabethan and Jacobean music. He was born around 1560 and lived during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. He was a contemporary of other notable English composers such as William Byrd and John Dowland. Farnaby's compositions are known for their variety of styles. He wrote pieces that ranged from lively dance tunes to more intricate and introspective works. His music often featured elements of English folk melodies and dance rhythms.Giles Farnaby's Fantasias are significant for their role in developing keyboard music, their influence on later composers, and their historical documentation of musical practices in late Renaissance England. Farnaby's music often displays a lively and whimsical character, with syncopations, rapid passagework, and playful ornamentation. His style was influenced by the continental keyboard music of his time, especially that of the English virginalists like John Bull and William Byrd. However, Farnaby's compositions also have a distinct character, marked by their dance-like rhythms and catchy melodies.Although Farnaby's music fell out of favor during the Baroque period, there has been a resurgence of interest in his works in the modern era. Musicians and scholars have rediscovered and recorded his compositions, helping to revive his legacy.

String Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.1103756 By Richard Byrnes. By Claude Debussy. Arranged by Richard Byrnes. Romantic Period. 52 pages. Richard Byrnes #707037. Published by Richard Byrnes (A0.1103756).   This is the 10th Prelude of Volume 1 of Debussy’s Preludes for piano.   This piece depicts the rising of a submerged cathedral. It is derived from a Breton myth. The cathedral, according to legend, rises from the sea off the coast of the Island of Ys on clear mornings. After it’s entrance, the cathedral sinks back into the sea.   This is a striking example of what is considered musical impressionism – the allusion to an image.   This arrangement by Richard Byrnes is for 9 Violins, 4 Celli, Bass, & Contrabassoon.   In addition to works by Debussy, we offer works by J.S. Bach, Brahms, Dvorák, Fauré, Glazounov, Glinka, Gottschalk, Granados, Griffes, Lotti, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Ravel, Richard Strauss, Turina, & Vierne.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1208721 Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827). Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. 19th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional,Traditional. Score and Parts. 19 pages. Jmsgu3 #806801. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1208721). 2. Scherzo: Allegro.Beethoven's Bagatelles Op. 33 are quite typical of his early style, retaining many compositional features of the early Classical period.  The first bagatelle in particular is arguably one of Beethoven's most well-known pieces. While they may seem light-hearted and not to be taken too seriously, they are still well-crafted works that embody the younger Beethoven's style. The Bagatelles Op. 33 were composed by Beethoven in 1801-02 and published in 1803. Bagatelles are shorter and less complex than sonatas, often consisting of a single movement. They were intended to be played as light entertainment or as encores at the end of a concert. The Bagatelle No. 2 of Op. 33 follows a simple ternary form, with a lively and playful Scherzo character. The piece is in the key of C major and is written in 2/4 time signature. The A section is characterized by a catchy and rhythmic melody that is repeated twice, with slight variations in the second repetition. The B section, in the relative key of A minor, provides a contrast to the A section with a more lyrical and expressive melody. The B section is also repeated twice, with slight variations in the second repetition. The A section returns in its original form to close the piece. The piece is relatively simple in terms of harmony and texture, with a clear melody and accompaniment. However, Beethoven's use of repetition, variation, and elaboration creates a sense of unity and coherence throughout the piece.

String Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1297998 Composed by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Contest,Early Music,Festival,Historic,Renaissance,Traditional. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #887903. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1297998). Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch organist and composer who lived from April 1562 to October 16, 1621. He was born and died in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Sweelinck's first published works date from around 1592-94, and he composed a variety of music, including chansons and keyboard music. He was known for his keyboard playing and was a teacher to German composers Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Scheidemann. Sweelinck's Echo Fantasias are significant for several reasons:Innovative composition: Echo Fantasias were a unique form of composition during Sweelinck's time, blending elements of traditional fantasias with passages dedicated to echo effects. This experimental approach showcased Sweelinck's creativity and willingness to push the boundaries of musical expression. Emphasis on the moment: Unlike Sweelinck's larger fantasias, the construction of Echo Fantasias was less strict, focusing more on the immediate musical experience rather than the overall design. This emphasis on the moment allowed for greater freedom and spontaneity in the performance of these pieces. Stylistic range: Echo Fantasias encompassed a wide range of styles, juxtaposing fantasia-like elements with passages dedicated to echo effects. This stylistic diversity added depth and complexity to Sweelinck's compositions, making them engaging and intriguing for both performers and listeners.
