'Panta rhei - everything is in a state of flux' is the bottom line of what the Greek philosopher Heraclitus believed. 'Everything is in a continual state of flux and change' - to him, this was 'logos', rational order. It is at the interface between personal thought and archaic ritual that the four mantras for saxophone quartet have been created. In Hinduism and Buddhism, 'mantras' are sacred sentences, key messages, 'instruments of thought and speech'. They were addressed to the deities as a form of worship and way of concentration and mainly consist of continuously repeated syllables and words. With this in mind, each movement in 'Panta rhei' has been given a principal motif (especially a basic rhythmic gesture) which is repeated in variations and cycles but always differently - in a perpetual state of flux. The Show Your Pride album was influenced by my best friend, Nigel Shelby, who tragically passed away by suicide after experiencing bullying for being outed as gay. It has been a few years since his death turned a national spotlight on the issue of LGBTQIA+ mental health and bullying. He was 15 years old at the time of his passing. I feel like I've been stabbed in the heart when I found he was gone. It was the first time I had lost anybody that I was close to. I was in a lot of pain at the time. Losing my best friend is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking experiences I have had in my life. This album is telling a coming-out story about a bisexual musician going on a self-discovery journey to find his true authentic self. I first met Nigel in mid-2018 when I was nervous, struggling with depression, and coming out as bisexual, so I gathered enough strength and confidence to come out to him. He's very kind and supportive of me. He was brave enough to come out to me as well. He has been a really good friend and my spirit guide as long as I've known him. He was understanding, thoughtful, and had a maturity about him that I admired. I feel happy and honored to have known him and had the best friends with him. I truly believe he is watching over me every day. In this inspirational, heartbreaking piece, His Memory, I will share a coming-out story about two boys who came out to each other, spending their friendship together until one of them passes away. This piece is based on a true story of how I coped with grief, dealing with depression about my best friend's passing, and how I found happiness within myself after his memorial service. Every artist who has ever entertained us with this classic Hoagy Carmichael creation has jumped right to the chase, that being the verse that begins with Geor - gia,..  Wikipedia refers to the missed component as, the commonly excised introductory verse.  Well, I took a good look at that introductory verse, and concluded that there was a pretty good reason nobody sang it.  It needed more work than the writers had put into it, in my opinion, which is a nice way of saying that it sucked.  So I fixed it, so to speak.  I believe that it stands up to scrutiny.The melody line throughout has some modifications in note lengths.  It is a piece originally written in cut time, which it isn't really, since it is always being sung in a moody fashion you don't normally expect to find written in 2/2 time.  I think maybe that Hoagy had a secret desire to write for movie musicals.I adapted the chord diagrams to make them more suitable for playing along with on the guitar.  This arrangement will appeal to anyone who has ever studied Mickey Baker's jazz guitar chords.  As I see it, every song is still a tune and should be fun to play.  Georgia is no exception.

Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

I wanted to demonstrate that it is possible to approach a subject from two completely different points of view, without either point of view being compromised by the other, and yet the result can nevertheless be a beautiful synergy. That is what the pianist and the choir are doing here. Each is meditating upon the cross of Christ, but from two totally unrelated points of view and yet somehow combining in a way that is almost hypnotically beautifully. There is little obvious relationship between the choir's and the piano's music; and yet each is reconciled to the other ... and there's a very good reason why I wanted the music to speak of such reconciliation.In late 2014 people in Iraq were being beheaded, crucified and generally killed in the most brutal and sadistic manner possible. Their only ‘crime’ was to dare to call themselves Christians. You can say what you like but in my book nobody has the right to tell anybody else what they should believe, much less murder them on religious grounds. The thing that incensed me almost to the point of incandescence was that the perpetrators of this unspeakable evil dared to justify their actions by claiming that they were acting on behalf of their god. Our civilization once used to believe in depth and reading and art; now abstract thought is changing into a simplistic, superficial society where one is consumed with the quick Starbucks or Twitter fix. It's all lightness of being today. We don't celebrate anticipation anymore, people don't want to put the time in. This symphony is about the collapse of that whole ethos. The phrase in the lyrics that says 'kill the philharmonic' doesn't mean that literally. It's a metaphor for a society that has no use for the philharmonic. We're losing these things. Pretty soon John Coltrane and Miles Davis, along with all jazz and classic music, will become museum pieces. We used to have a culture that cherished these, but in a super simplistic society, there's just no room for them. As a trumpet teacher with over forty years of experience teaching beginners, I believe that solid range should be developed over a long period of time. But this doesn’t mean that the beginner students need to wait for their range to improve before they dive deeper into the musical side of the instrument. At Last, Victorious! easy trumpet quartet includes the most difficult combination of skills without moving into our first intermediate level. We will talk more about skill levels below, but let me say that many people would label At Last, Victorious as an intermediate piece. In our skill level system, three sharps and six-eight time signature are both in our second beginner skill level. And yet, the highest note in the first part is fourth space E. At Last, Victorious! easy trumpet quartet is the kind of piece I would assign to my students right before they “graduate� from the second beginner skill level into the first intermediate skill level. At Last, Victorious! is a march in six-eight time signature in three sharps. It is not as long as a traditional march and the “trio� is not technically a real trio (and therefore not marked as such). But I do believe that the piece serves as a nice introduction to marches for beginner trumpet students.
