When I was approached by Susan and Nermis last fall to write a piece for their performance at the 2014 IDRS convention in New York, I think there was a genuine curiosity, possibly coupled with a healthy amount of trepidation, in anticipation of what the jazz guy was going to do. However, as an improviser and composer, I don't really think in terms of categories. I made a genuine attempt to create music borne of its natural environment. I was grateful for the time I spent with the ensemble that helped bring this piece to existence. It was a fluid process in which I discovered (and was told) what worked and what didn't work as I became more familiar with the sounds and capabilities of these instruments.

THE ARRANGEMENTA few years ago, good friends of mine were getting married and asked if I could arrange this song for their ceremony, to be sung by a tenor with piano accompaniment. I wanted to write a completely new take on this classic song, so decided to set it as a ballad, rather than the popular Stevie Wonder version which is uptempo. I also had a very good pianist and tenor soloist, so consequently, the difficulty of the arrangement is at an advanced intermediate level, with the tenor going up to a Bb and the piano part containing a lot of black notes! I was really happy with how it turned out, but unfortunately couldn't fly to Australia just for the wedding and they didn't record it. So now it's available to purchase, in the hope that someone would enjoy singing it and maybe even send me a recording! THE SONGWritten for the Motown label, it first was recorded by Barbara McNair, followed by a host of others in a ballad style, until Stevie Wonder pumped up the tempo and reached #2 on the U.S. Billboard charts. It eventually was the title track for his album of the same name, and features the amazing Funk Brothers, most notably James Jamerson for his incredible bass playing on this track, known to be one of the greatest example of his style. Mélodie has lots of large intervals in the left hand that many pianists can’t play comfortably. But that’s no excuse to give up on a lovely piece of piano music, right?My edition of this piece features helpful fingerings and grayed-out noteheads indicating which notes can be avoided. I’ve also highlighted some places where the right hand can reach down and play the highest note of some of these large chords, with the goal of being faithful to Paderewski’s intentions whenever possible. This song starts off with a child waiting patiently in line to see Santa so he can tell him what he wishes for him to bring him for Christmas. I started off with my own original melody and lyrics and then in the middle of the song, when the child finally reaches Santa, I switch to the melody of Jolly Old Saint Nicholas. However, to modernize it, I switched to Jolly Old Dear Santa Claus. I kept verse one lyrics the same except for that part. I changed the lyrics entirely for the second verse. The child tells Santa where he can put the presents and hopes one is for him. He also tells him he tries to wait up for him each year, but Santa is so quiet, he sleeps through the night. The last verse is back to my original melody and lyrics where Santa tells him it will be a surprise what he brings him this year. This brings the song all the way from waiting in line to see Santa to sitting on his knee and Santa telling him it will be a surprise.
