The listeners are invited to conjure up their own images as the musical plot evolves.  As a heavy rain streams down the window pane, we see a neon light flickering across the street. The sudden flame from a match ignites a cheap cigar, illuminating the craggy face of a private detective. A Private Eye for hire. And this guy needs a case. The office door opens as a silhouette slowly enters. A tall, mysterious, beautiful woman steps out of the shadows. She’s in trouble - Big trouble. Just the kind of woman and just the kind of trouble he shouldn’t get mixed up with. But he takes her case anyway - and our adventures begins. The warning signs, the deception, the chase, the false leads, the twists of irony, the trail of dead bodies, ducking in and out of the shadows, outnumbered, getting smacked around, romance in the face of peril and… the climax.  What happens to our hero? What about the mysterious lady? Mystery solved? Does he get the girl? You decide. The answers to all these questions are in the shadows in each musical scene of Blue Noir. Blue Noir was dedicated to and premiered by the University of Redlands Symphonic Band, Dr. David Smith, conductor, on April 17, 2019.

A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside.  It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.'   That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. This conjures up the wistful feelings of the poet as he looks out onto a peaceful scene, soon to be filled with all manner of 'natural violence', while his inner peace will soon be shattered by the mayhem about to be unleashed around him.Setting Ted Hughes is no easy task. It is for choirs and choirmasters to judge if I have succeeded in conveying the 'sense and sensibility' of a classic 20th century English poem.The price is for one copy: please purchase a sufficient number of scores if you intend to perform this work. Groovin' is a song written by American singer songwriters Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, initially recorded by their group the Young Rascals in 1967. Cavaliere was inspired to compose the song by his girlfriend Adrienne Buccheri, whom he only got to meet every Sunday amidst heavy touring and recording. Musically, the song differs from most of band's previous output, leaving the garage rock genre for Latin American influences. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements - we hope you like it!

It's hard to get more iconic than Sean Connery as James Bond in the 1964 blockbuster, Goldfinger, with Gert Fröbe in the title role.John Barry composed the metal-heavy score and the title song. It was his personal favorite.Barry named Shirley Bassey as the ideal interpretrix for Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley's lyrics with her can belto delivery. Nobody could have sung it like her; she had that great dramatic sense. he said. But the name-dropping doesn't end there: The session producer at Abbey Road Studios was George Martin (who produced for The Beatles). Strumming away on guitars are John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, who later became half of rock legends Led Zeppelin. That's a whole lotta awesome! This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription but transposed to the tonality of the sheet music published in 1964. The recording with Shirley Bassey is a semitone lower. The level is intermediate in a technical sense but please pay attention to style. Try to leave your audience emotionally stirred, not shaken. Enjoy!
