Names like Schonberg, Stravinsky, Bartok, and so on don’t sit well with me. However, when writing music, I seem to lean pretty heavily on contemporary ideas like ostinatos, crunchy chords, and new harmonies. This piece started as an assignment to write 16 measures of music using pandiatonicism. Music that is pandiatonic is music with a feeling of more than one key. Every note is treated somewhat equal, so nothing sticks out as “tonic.� Try humming the tonic when listening to this piece. You can’t, because more than one exists. Since this is music with no tonic, it almost has “no name,� unlike how classical music may be labeled “Concerto in Eb Major.� I greatly appreciate the work of Austin Andrade, Aidan Lewis, Eithan Moreno, and Heather test, as the performers and director for this piece.

Too many versions of public domain songs will just phone in the chords in my opinion with a I IV and V7. This version is a bit jazzed up, which may not be what you looking for. If you are looking for real basic accompianiment this isn't the version for you, though I do try to use as many open strings on the guitar as possible, and the chords are often small.7. The other problem I often see with public domain songs is that the famous cowboy guitar chords most versions use lead to a lot of clunky part writing in my opinion (no thought of tendency tones, no thought of smooth voice leading, parralel 8ves and 5ths, doubled 3rds, etc). Those voicings are easier to sight-read, but are also not super creative, and as a teacher, I don't exactly want a student to see the same G Major voicing forever. That gives this false impression that that G major vocing is somehow superior. 8. Another small issue I see with public domain songs is that the vocal melody is sometimes not in the famous cowboy guitar chord. There is nothing wrong with that, and sometimes you want that, but since I like to train my singing with the help of my guitar, I like when arrangements make the vocal melody easy to add or remove on guitar. I can easily play a sophisticated solo version of this in a coffee shop, or I can just look at the chord nomenclature and see the song only from a rhythm section point of view when in a full band, when usually you purposely want to contribute less.9. Notes with an upward stem represent those notes being the original melody. This give arrangement a lot of replay value because a skillfull performer can improvise the background harmonies.

This charming little suite of six dances lasts about 15½ minutes. It consists of a Pavane, Bourée, Sarabande, Allemande, Basse Danse and Galliard, which vary widely in character. As a whole the suite provides some interesting challenges for both performers and listeners. Apart from conventional strings, flute and harp (which can be either pedal or lever) you will need:- One or maybe two Arabian ouds. The parts are playable also on a fretless acoustic guitar. (Needs to be fretless because of the quarter-tones in some of the Arabic modes used.)- A cimbalom (the part can be played on a piano also, with slight modification). You might get away with using a hammered dulcimer but you'd need to make a number of compromises.- A doumbek and a djembe. These beautiful drums are a must for Middle-Eastern or African music. They're fairly easy to find, though finding somebody who can play them properly may take a bit more doing!- Finger cymbals and a gong. These are regular western instruments.- A wind-chime. Anything that produces a nice shimmering spangle of sound will probably do!- A group of singers (SATB). Nothing particularly challenging but see below.The primary oud part, the strings and the singers need to have sufficiently good intonation to pitch quarter tones. These are the exception rather than the rule, but nevertheless play an important part in the character of the music. Apart from this, the music is relatively straightforward and probably playable by any reasonably competent amateur or high school orchestra.In the spring of 2020 I wrote a set of short music tracks for a charity of which I'm a trustee. In order to protect my intellectual property rights in the music, I decided to bring it together into an attractive if not intellectually challenging little suite, hence An Omani Dance Suite. Originally the dances were all in Arabic quarter-tone temperament, but obviously quarter-tones cannot be played easily (if at all) on the flute, harp and cimbalom. So I have made some adjustments but retained the Arabic temperament wherever reasonably possible. I had thought initially of using a santur instead of a cimbalom, but the santur lacks the range and the dynamic capability to be used with a string chamber orchestra. The cimbalom doesn't need to be a concert grand model; in fact it doesn't even need to have dampers.The Omani was something of an afterthought: a musician friend of mine had worked in Oman and commented on how authentically Omani the Basse Danse sounded. With this difference in mind, I've written a flute medley of Christmas carols, containing both the melody and chords! Essentially, it gives you the oppurtunity to play a balanced, entertaining carol medly that is both challenging and pleasing to hear. This original arrangement includes Angels We Have Heard on High, Joy to the World, It Came Upon the Midnight Clear, The First Noel, and briefly ends with Jingle Bells. Please keep in mind the recording sample is only a computer playback. You can have one or both lines in your performance.Iâ??ve deleted a tiny piece of repetition near the end - the words change in the original but the music doesnâ??t - as an instrumental there was too much of the same phrase! The piece finishes with a final chord instead of a fade to nothing, as it works so much better in concert.The resulting piece still runs for four and a half minutes. It's a simple blues in Concert F (despite the key signature where I've added that flatted seventh!) and is a great vehicle for developing young soloists - or pushing those with more experience to new highs! The mp3 is just a MuseScore3 export, nothing fancy, but it gives you an idea of what to expect. I've not included any solos, making this a good mp3 to give to your soloists to play along with. It's not too tough, should be playable by many advanced grade school and all high school bands - and it's scored to sound good even with pro groups.
