Love,  Faith   After an immediate trip to the doctor, it was discovered that Faith didn’t have clinical depression but that she suffered from a hormonal imbalance in her body.  She had been waking up in the middle of the night over half of her young life and wandering around while the rest of the family slept.  With a small prescription, and lots of love, Faith headed off to start middle school and a magical year that would follow. Shortly after this experience, Faith composed a new song called Finding Hope and finished up on three others she had been working on.

Die Erklärung hierfür ist hauptsächlich darin zu suchen, dass leicht spielbare und zugleich musikalisch bedeutende Stücke - Musterbeispiele dafür sind die kleinen Präludien und Tänze von Joh. Seb. Bach - in der Tat sehr selten sind. Eine Anzahl bisher unveröffentlichter Stücke dieser Art bringt diese Sammlung, die den besonderen Bedürfnissen des Anfängerunterrichts angepasst ist. Sie wurde unter folgenden Gesichtspunkten zusammengestellt: 1. Dem kleinen Arbeitspensum der Anfänger entsprechend wurden nur ganz kurze Stücke aufgenommen. 2. Die Auswahl beschränkte sich auf Stücke, die zum größten Teil gar keine oder nur wenige Verzierungen enthalten. Die Partie der linken Hand ist durchweg verzierungsfrei. 3. Nur drei allgemein bekannte Verzierungen: Triller, Pralltriller und Doppelschlag kommen in den Stücken vor. 4. Lombardischer Rhythmus, der, ebenso wie die komplizierte Ornamentik, die Ausführung alter Musik erschwert, ist in keinem der Stücke enthalten. 5. Fast alle Stücke haben instruktive Bedeutung: in unaufdringlicher Form setzen sie sich mit verschiedenartigen technischen Problemen auseinander (Tonleitern, Arpeggien, Wechsel von Legato und Staccato, leichte Doppelgriffe usw.). Alle Stücke dieser Sammlung sind selbstständige kleine Kunstwerke, die weder gekürzt, noch größeren Werken (Sonaten, Suiten) entnommen sind. Sie stammen durchweg aus der 2. Hälfte des des 18. Jahrhunderts, einer Zeit, die in der deutschen Klaviermusik eine gefällige, flüssige und doch strenge Schreibweise zur Entwicklung brachte. Trotz ihrer homophonen Haltung sind sie auf der Grundlage einer korrekten Zweistimmigkeit mit selbstständiger Führung der Bässe aufgebaut. Die zweite Violinsonate op. 58 entstand im November und Dezember 2009 und ist als freundliches Gegenstück zu der düster-aufgewühlten ersten Violinsonate op. 38 (2000) konzipiert. Die helle Grundstimmung des Werkes ist sicherlich nicht zuletzt durch seinen Enstehungsort Cervo an der ligurischen Riviera, meiner italienischen Wahlheimat, buchstäblich bei Sonnenschein unter blauem Himmel entstanden, beeinflusst. Dem ganzen Werk liegt ein musikalisches Motto zugrunde, das jedoch erst im abschließenden zehntaktigen Adagio amoroso, das aus einer versunkenen Welt zu entstammen scheint, verraten wird. Alles Material ist darauf bezogen und die ganze Sonate scheint eigentlich nur komponiert worden zu sein, um diese Schlussaussage formulieren zu können. Der erste Satz ist ein breit angelegtes Moderato mit zwei Themen in strenger Sonatenhauptsatzform. Sowohl thematisches Material als auch alle formalen Verbindungsglieder sind harmonisch wie melodisch aus den Intervallen der kleinen und großen Terz und deren Komplementärintervallen, der großen und kleinen Sext gebildet. Dieses beinahe serielle Verfahren wird allerdings von dem überschwänglich romantischen Gestus der Musik vollkommen kaschiert. Der sehr schnelle, federleicht schwebende zweite Scherzosatz wird beherrscht vom luftigen Pizzicato der Violine und flüchtigen Klavierfiguren, nur im gesanglichen Trio erhebt sich die Violine zu einer vierphrasigen, langsam aufsteigenden Kantilene auf choralartig akkordischem Untergrund des Klaviers. Die langsame Einleitung des Finalsatzes nähert sich dem abschließenden Motto bereits sehr deutlich ohne es ganz erklingen zu lassen. Diese Introduktion wird in die Mitte des zweithemigen, feurig dahinstürmenden Allegro anstelle einer Durchführung wieder aufgenommen und in den lebhaften Gestus des Schlusssatzes umgewandelt. Mit dem Erklingen des eigentlichen Herzstück des Werkes als Adagio amoroso schließt das Werk, sicherlich sehr überraschend für Neue Musik. - Stefan Heucke.

So auch mit seinem geistlichen Chorwerk Herr, Herr, lehre uns! für gemischten Chor (SSATB), Orgel und zwei Schlagzeuger, für das er 2012 mit dem Carl von Ossietzky-Kompositionspreis der Universität Oldenburg ausgezeichnet wurde. Der Untertitel lautet „Variation über Psalm 150. Variation deshalb, weil im Anschluss an den wörtlich dem Bibeltext entnommenen Lobpreis Gottes die „Unlöblichkeit des Menschen Werk in ihrer unterschiedlichsten Ausprägung auf musikalisch und textlich drastische Weise angeprangert wird. Haaf, der dieses aufrüttelnde Textarrangement selbst verfasste, bedient sich dafür kompositorisch zahlreicher Taktwechsel und Clustertechniken und nutzt meisterhaft das Spiel mit verschiedenen Klangfarben. Dieses Werk stellt nicht nur an den Organisten und die beiden Schlagzeuger, die u.a. vier Röhrenglocken, drei Tomtoms, Pauken und Triangel zu bedienen haben, hohe Anforderungen. Auch die fünfstimmige Chorpartie dieses unter die Haut gehenden Stücks ist als „schwer bis mittelschwer einzuordnen. Doch der Aufwand lohnt sich… versprochen!
