Throughout the centuries, sundials (a flat plate that marks the time of the day by the shadow of a gnomon which is cast onto it) have been used by civilizations to tell time. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

This piece tells the ficticious story of an inept, incompitant, yet quite pompous prefect conquistador and his poor attempt to colonize an indigenous village.  The natives keep out smarting him, and sabotaging his plans.  Things get so out of hand, that he can't even keep his own people in line.  This makes the Prefect irate and ill-tempered, more so to his own company, than to the natives!  What am I to tell the queen?!.  I can't have my name soiled like this!.  Upon hearing that the Prefect's superior officer, the Legate of Iberia, will be coming to check up on his progress, he comes up with a plan.  He'll make a deal with the natives to make it look like he's been kidnapped and murdered.  Dressed as conquistadors, the natives won't say a word and the Prefect's second in command will say that he's been killed.  To the Prefect's surprise, this actually worked and the Legate was fooled.  Upon the Legate returning back to Iberia, the now defunct Prefect conquistador has made arrangements with the natives in exchange for food and supplies to fool the Legate each time he visits.This rousing march is a great opener or closer for any concert.  Perfect for high school, college, or municiple/adult continuing level community band!  The music here perfectly encapsulates this swashbuckling, yet haphazardous story!

Over the past few years I have become obsessed with Norse Mythology, and I mean real Norse Mythology. I say that withquotes because in my research I realized that a lot of people tell different stories. This is mainly because back when Christianity was growing,the Christians saw anything that wasn't Christian as pagan, so they got rid of it all. So that is why Greek, Roman, and Norse religions faded into mythologies, and all that was left was passed around in folk tales. And also because Marvel tells a very different tale of the mythology than the research I have collected and I want people to know these stories. Now moving passed the history lesson and into the music. This is interesting for me because this is the biggest original piece that I've ever made. This is going to be a multimovement piece, and this is the 1st movement, Ginnungagap, the endless void. This movement describes The Void, and the two lands of Fire(Muspelheim) and Ice(Niflhiem).Starting with The Void, it describes the blackness, and I use the absence of instruments to give this feeling, but however to give2 of the other themes to foreshadow it.  It moves into this wild cascading theme for the Niflheim theme to describe the cold cascading environment of the world.After that it slows into a dark and ominous theme for Muspelheim(Surtr's Destiny). This was an interesting part to make because in mythology, Surtr, also referred to as Surt,  is the fabled fire giant who destroys Asgard. No one knows where hecomes from, but from the moment of his creation, he knew of his destiny to destroy Asgard so he spent all of his time forging his sword to burrow into Asgard.  I used a break drum to symbolize a hammer hitting an anvil to forge a sword, a lingering sound of Surtr's destiny.After this, I brought both themes together to resemble The Clash of the two worlds to create the Norse universe.The final theme in this first movement is entitled I am Ymir. In myhtology, Ymir is the father of everything. Created from the clash, he gave creation to all the gods, humans, giants, elves, and dwarves. This final theme takes Surtr's theme and flipsit to be mo.

Instead, it's the story of a little boy's love for his father - who yesterday followed the soldiers' drums and went off to war. The boy, in his dream, tells the angels that he will give up his most precious possession - his drum - for his father's safe return. The angels, moved by his willingness to sacrifice, tell him that his father will return. He wakes, with his head on his drum. What a great story! What a fabulous song!

I look at addictions as if they were little devils that have us down and are jumping on top of us and won’t let us get up.  Little by little the addicted and all of his friends and family lose faith, hope, love, peace, joy, and self respect. The shame of addiction keeps them in despair. They constantly have voices in their heads that say you’re no good, you’re no good, do you hear me, you’re no good. Well I’m here to tell you that is a lie. You are good. You are worth something. Life ,family, love, peace, joy. Those are all things that are worth fighting for. Take them back. You are not unworthy. You can fight the addiction. You have made mistakes that are correctable.  God tells us to resist the devil and he will flee from you. Then God says to draw near unto Him and He will draw near unto you. When God draws close to us, we will receive His strength and power to leave the addiction behind. With Him we can overcome anything.

It tells the story of the angels' visit to the shepherds, the shepherds' haste to the stable to worship the new born King, and their return to tell their friends and neighbors the good news. Phoebe Yeung was inspired to turn this typical religion piece into a 4 octave handbell quartet. The melodic line is clearly shown by R4 with some 4-in-hand technique. The transformation in the bass from ringing to malleting creates the intensity in the chorus followed by the martellato lifts, leading to the climax of the piece. The balance between 4 performers illustrates the sadness of Jesus eventually dying away in tone and speed at the end.
